      Sagemcom F@ST2304 and TP Link TL-WN821N ... Heeeeeeellllllllp !!

I am really struggling here. My PC is hard wired to the router, the router allows wireless connections from IPhones, iPads, work laptop etc all without any issues. PC has no wireless card so I've got the USB dongle mentioned. All installed and set up, but it does not find the router wirelessly despite being 10 inches away. It simply says 'no connections available'.

I've googled this for hours now and gone through all the configuration and it's all correct. I can only think that:

      1. There is a really simple step I've missed, so simple it's never mentioned, or ...
      2. The router is too old for the adapter.

Details below - Can anyone help ?

      Router Details
      Manufacturer Sagemcom
      Model Number F@ST2304
      Firmware Version 5.23.1a4N
      ADSL Firmware Version A2pD030n.d23b

      Wireless Card Details
      TP-Link TL-WN821N Wireless-N300 USB Adapter
      Latest drivers (win7 64 bit version) & Firmware (v4)

      PC Details
      Acer Aspire
      Windows 7 - 64 bit - SP 1

Its a bit of an outsider but if you have had or have a malware infection, try the following. Right click the wireless network icon in the tray and click Open network and sharing centre. When it opens click Change adapter settings. Right click the Wireless icon and select Properties. Highlight Internet Protocol V.4 and check that You are set to obtain an IP address and DNS server automatically. Some types of malware can alter these settings. If you wish you can set the DNS servers to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, which are the open Google servers. Many find these better than the ISP servers.

      I worked it out. ZoneAlarm.

I disabled it during the wireless driver install, but I should actually have uninstalled it. Steps to resolve:

      1. Uninstall ZoneAlarm.
      2. Uninstall wireless adapter drivers
      3. Reboot
      4. Install wireless adapter drivers
      5. Connect/configure network connection as appropriate.
      6. Re-install ZoneAlarm.

      Sheeesh!

Sometimes I think ZA causes more problems than it fixes.

If you are behind a router, I don't think there is a lot of need for a 3rd party firewall, especially with Win 7, as the firewall is much better than previous Windows offerings. Just don't open strange attachments that come in by email.
