I need to improve my wireless signal for my wifeys Nexus 7 - But how?

Right my wifey has a Nexus 7 for Christmas and the Wifi signal in our Frontroom isn't strong.

We live in a 1913 brick terraced house which each room is separated via a brick wall. The router is near the phone socket in the Dining room. Which is about 10ft from the front room (separated by a brick wall).

I have a cable running under the floor, from the router, to a switch in the front room which I current have an XBox and Sky HD Box connected to (3 slots left of the switch).

I can't move the router as it is limited in range due to the cable and the computer.

I also have another Sky Router which I was sent by there mistake (and told to "Just keep it").

Is there any way I can boost the signal of the WiFi (cheaply)?

      Thanks (and Merry Christmas).

      Vil

Re: I need to improve my wireless signal for my wifeys Nexus 7 - But how?

There are a number of choices to make to help you here. Since you already have a Ethernet cable, I would advise against a HomePlug with WiFi. Instead you could purchase a WiFi Extender or modify an old router and piggyback it to the Sky router. The examples below may have better prices elsewhere so please feel free to check first:

WiFi Repeater Access Point up to 300 / 150: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

      TP Link TL-WA830RE 300Mbps Wireless N Range Extender: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

      http://www.amazon.co.uk/Netgear-Univ...6351599&sr=8-3

If you want to piggyback an old router, please take a look at this guide:

How to connect two Routers together

Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro: Connected at 80,000 kbps / 20,000 kbps
Previous ADSL2+ Speed 19999 kbps 1153 kbps, Line Attenuation 17.5 db 6.9 db, Noise Margin 7.5 dB 8.7 dB
      Speedtest: 17.15MB/s 0.97Mb/s Ping 31 ms

I'm going to try the piggyback method first however the links look fantastic especially the TL-WA830RE.

      Thank you for this.

Re: I need to improve my wireless signal for my wifeys Nexus 7 - But how?

Scubbie, I followed the steps to join two Sky Routers together to increase the range. It works, however the 2nd router (which runs through the first) has a separate ID and passkey which is found on the sticker at the back of the router.

I had to register this on my wifeys Nexus 7 so she can access the 2nd router, in the front room, and receive full WiFi. When she leaves the room she has to manually connect to the 1st router (if it drops to low) and vice versa.

Is this the correct or have I gone wrong some where in the instructions?

Initially I was under the impression that it would be linked to the 1st routers name and passkey and she wouldn't have to select the connection. Was I wrong?

Also please note if this what is meant to happen it isn't an issue as she now gets full wifi in the front room when she switches connection which is great.

Re: I need to improve my wireless signal for my wifeys Nexus 7 - But how?

      Ignore my last post Scubbie.

Another comment on a separate forum about swapping the Username and key to the same as the 1st router (but change the channel) was told. So I popped into the set up and did it

Works a treat and the Nexus 7 just finds the strongest signal and latches on

Thanks for the info and pointers here I shall have a very happy house when the wake up

Re: I need to improve my wireless signal for my wifeys Nexus 7 - But how?

      No problem.

Later in the thread there are a few discussions about using the same SSID (Wireless name), Passkey (Wireless password) and Security settings (ideally WPA2-AES) on both routers.

Have fun cooking breakfast for your Wife this morning.
