"N" Type Router and WLAN card

      Hi all

If I use a Sky Hub, which I understand to be an "N" type router, then do I have to change my WLAN wireless card in my laptop to an "N" type?

      Thanks

Re: "N" Type Router and WLAN card

All WiFi n routers will work happily with previous WiFi specifications, although if you have a WiFi b adaptor I would encourage you to replace the device as it will be quite old in technology terms and you might need to change the router's settings to cope.

If you do decide to change the adaptor anyway, I would suggest that you aim to get one which is capable of support 300mb/s as this should connect at the full speed of 144mb/s on the Sky router. I have seen one which only connects at up to 130mb/s though.

Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro: Connected at 80,000 kbps / 20,000 kbps
Previous ADSL2+ Speed 19999 kbps 1153 kbps, Line Attenuation 17.5 db 6.9 db, Noise Margin 7.5 dB 8.7 dB
      Speedtest: 17.15MB/s 0.97Mb/s Ping 31 ms

Thank you, I have a Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card in my laptop, have you any suggestions on a replacement?

      If it looks like this:

Then take a look at the Intel 6200 or 6230. However they don't work in all Laptops, so please check that it is compatible. There are also two sizes available. Ensure that you get the correct size:

In many cases it is really simple to swap the card above, provided that you can gain access to the adaptor.

There are two other common WiFi card designs that I haven't shown, so please do check before ordering.

Re: "N" Type Router and WLAN card

Two things to keep in mind when get a replacement card. It must have only 2 aerial connections, many now have at least 3 and will not be suitable. I think the cards recommended by Scubbie are PCI Express cards, yours is probably a PCI so these would not fit. Check this.

You would be better having a look at the Dell site before you decide what to do. Not always comfortable on a laptop, but any Wireless N USB adapter would do the job.

Thank you both, I checked with Dell for compatibility after doing my own checks and I have ordered an Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 wifi 62205ANHMW Mini PCI-E Half Size from Ebay and it is the same spec as on the Dell website, should arrive soon
