      Trendnet wireless adapter producing fluctuating download speed

      I upgraded to Sky Fibre a couple of months back and bought one of these as my laptop is only capable of a 20meg wireless speed :

      TrendNet Mini Wireless-N Speed USB Adapter: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

      My router is syncing with the exchange at 40meg and speedtests result in a 40meg download speed. However, when downloading files, the speed constantly goes up and down from zero to 40. I have tried changing router channel and altering the security on the router and adapter but no luck.

      Can anyone shed any light on what may be the issue here ? Thanks

      Sorry i should have said. I used a wired connection and got a steady 20 meg which is maximum possible. It is definitely an issue with the adapter but i am not sure what.

      Re: Trendnet wireless adapter producing fluctuating download speed

      Since you now have Fibre, you may be better off getting a suitable WiFi N adaptor. They offer stronger signals and faster potential connection speeds.

      The Sky router supports up to 144mbps on a single channel. Getting an adaptor which will support this exact setup isn't easy. However there are lots which will support 300mbps which will cope perfectly well.

      Any adaptor which support up to 150mbps are actually going to connect at no more than 72mbps as 150mbps is over a paired channel.

      Personally I preferred to update the internal adaptor. If you aren't happy to do this, many local people will be more than willing to do it for you. One I found last year charged 20 + the cost of the adaptor for one of my laptops. I changed the adaptor in my main laptop myself.

      Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro: Connected at 80,000 kbps / 20,000 kbps
      Previous ADSL2+ Speed 19999 kbps 1153 kbps, Line Attenuation 17.5 db 6.9 db, Noise Margin 7.5 dB 8.7 dB
      Speedtest: 17.15MB/s 0.97Mb/s Ping 31 ms

      Re: Trendnet wireless adapter producing fluctuating download speed

      Apologies, sorry that one does support up to 300mbps.

      I couldn't find the specs for it earlier.

      It is a good find. Most of the small USB adaptors only appear to support upto 150mbps.

      Re: Trendnet wireless adapter producing fluctuating download speed

      Data Rate (auto fallback) 802.11b: 11Mbps, 5.5Mbps, 2Mbps, and 1Mbps
      802.11g: 54Mbps, 48Mbps, 36Mbps, 24Mbps, 18Mbps, 12Mbps, 9Mbps and 6Mbps
      802.11n: 150Mbps (TX) / 300Mbps (RX)

      I assume it can anyway ? Not sure what the difference is between TX and RX.
      The fact that a speedtest shows 40meg and when downloading it does hover around that figure from time to time so the adapter is obviously capable of this speed but I do not understand why it cannot hold that speed (this is with the laptop only a couple of feet away from the router too).

      On the configuration tool for the adapter it shows that the Tx rate is 72Mbps. Is this correct/high enough do you know ?

      Re: Trendnet wireless adapter producing fluctuating download speed

      Rx = Receive
      Tx = Transmit

      These are standard abbreviations used within the communications area.

      If it can only transmit at 72mb/s then this would tie in with the publicised speeds.

      Take a look at the post in this thread: WiFi connection speeds

      Re: Trendnet wireless adapter producing fluctuating download speed

      Ok thanks. Is there no way I can connect using a paired channel to increase my speed or have I wasted my money on my adapter ?

      I can get about 34meg on my Samsung phone.

      Re: Trendnet wireless adapter producing fluctuating download speed

      Its a bit strange that one, it says it is N in the description but the first thing you read under Product Details is -Data transfer rate (max): 54 Mbit/s
      That suggests they have not done their homework very well!

      I must admit I am a bit suspicious of these mini wireless adapters, except for Bluetooth, mainly because the aerial must be very small and will almost certainly be shielded by whatever it is plugged into. I have one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-TL-W...7456153&sr=1-1 and it performs very well giving the full 300 on a Dlink I have. I would think it would connect to the Sky N router at 144mbps. You can also get this with a USB extension - TP-Link TL-WN821NC Wireless N USB Adapter: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

      What you could try is plugging your mini adapter into a short USB extension and see if it receives any better.
