I can get about 34meg on my Samsung phone.
The router itself does not work on a paired channel. What ever you WiFi connection is, it will be on the smallest common denominator.

As for the phone, depends which model you have. Most will only use a single channel. My Samsung Galaxy SII connects at 65mb/s, which appears to be a common connection speed for many current android & apple devices.

I specifically bought a 'mini' adaptor as because it is plugged into the side of a laptop all the time, a full sized one sticking out could snap off or get damaged if caught on something.

I have an S2 aswell actually. I have tried downloading a file again and it fluctuates between 20meg (the max the laptop can get without the adapter) and 40meg. So have I bought the wrong type of adapter then ?

Re: Trendnet wireless adapter producing fluctuating download speed

No problem, we all make mistakes.

As I mentioned early on, personally I got the internal WiFi adaptor changed in a couple of laptops that I have. One I managed to do myself, the other was a little more work and sourcing a card to fit was a little harder (the older one).

If you are interested could you post a couple of pics of the side and underside of your laptop and post them up here. Use a photo editing program to hide the serial numbers and license number of Windows. alternatively, if you know what you are looking for, open up the panel underneath that hides the existing WiFi inside your laptop and post a picture of the existing card.

To give you an idea, these are some of the options:

      http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-TL-W...7485476&sr=8-6

Intel WiFi Link 5300 802.11n Mini Card Model:533AN_HMW: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

      http://www.amazon.co.uk/Intel-Wirele...7485543&sr=8-1

      http://www.amazon.co.uk/D-Link-DWA-6...85865&sr=1-206

An alternative idea might be to consider that for the laptop you have, the adaptor that you have is perfectly fine. Streaming HD (720p, 1080i or 1080p) video would stream alright, but can the laptop actually display it without the picture breaking up?

Re: Trendnet wireless adapter producing fluctuating download speed

Thanks for the help Scubbie. If I did buy an internal card I would take it to a computer repair shop as I would not be comfortable doing it myself.

The laptop I have is the Samsung Q210 if that helps. I have contacted Trendnet Tech Support and they have recommended uninstalling and resintalling it and changing the channel but neither made any difference. They suggested changing the channel bandwith but my router does not seem to have that option.

When I watch stuff on iplayer it always streams ok I just don't understand why the download speed when downloading files constantly goes up and down even with the adapter right next to the router. Trendnet have suggested that I return it as faulty but I bought it from a third party on Amazon at the end of June so I am guessing that they will not take it back now.

Re: Trendnet wireless adapter producing fluctuating download speed

The bandwidth setting for mine is accessed by looking at the Adaptor's properties and looking in the 'Advanced' tab. They basically switch between 20MHz or 40MHz bandwidth (i.e. single of paired channel).

Any local Laptop repairer would be able to change the WiFi adaptor. I don't know that specific model so I can't say what specifically is involved.

Is that under My Computer and Device Manager or on the adapter's own software ?

I believe your laptop has an Express card slot, so it may be worth considering one of those. Something like this -
Belkin N Wireless Expresscard: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

If you consider this make sure you can get drivers for your OS.

Under Properties it just has three options :

Beacon Mode - set to 100
Wireless Mode - set to IEEE802.11b/g/n
      802.11d - set to Disable

Allow computer to turn off to save power - Unticked

It does not seem to be an option then ?

Thanks. I had a word with a local laptop repair centre today and may take it in for a free quote to fix it. Do you think it is worth a call to Sky Tech Support ? I am guessing that they will not be interested as they just supply the broadband. I do think some guidance from them when the Sky Fibre would not have gone amiss to help people make sure they have the correct equipment to get the maximum out of their line.
