Laptop isn't connecting to fibre router

As briefly mentioned in another thread, I had Sky Fibre installed this morning and although my PC, iPad and another laptop in the house connects with no issue, I'm finding my 3 year old Vista laptop is struggling.

The specs of my laptop is as follows

      Acer Aspire 5535
OS: Windows Vista SP2 (32 bit)
Wireless Card: Atheros AR5B91 Wireless Adaptor

I have downloaded the latest driver file and updated through device manager but still its not connecting, its just jumping from "Local Only" and "Local & Internet - Unidentified Network"

I've tried changing the encryption to WPA-PSK but this does not fix the problem. Would appreciate any help on this Is it worth just giving up and buying a wireless dongle instead?

Re: Laptop isn't connecting to fibre router

There is a couple of things you can try, first reset the TCP/IP to do this, open a Command Prompt and Run as Administrator. Type, or copy and paste this into the box. netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt Hit enter and then reboot the PC.

Your laptop may be struggling with finding and holding on to the new router, so try changing the SSID of the new one to the same as your old one.

In the adapters Properties, untick IP Protocol V6.

Go into the Device Manager and open the Properties of the adapter and on the Power management tab, check that it is not allowed to turn of to save power.

The trouble with turning off encryption is that it will prevent you connecting at full speed.

Re: Laptop isn't connecting to fibre router

Thank you all for the suggestions

I managed to fix the issue by disabling the DHCP BROADCAST flag. Here are the instructions I followed to fix it in case any other new fibre customers comes across this problem.

      1. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
      2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{GUID}
      3. In this registry path, click the (GUID) subkey that corresponds to the network adapter that is connected to the network.
      4. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value.
      5. In the New Value #1 box, type DhcpConnEnableBcastFlagToggle, and then press ENTER.
      6. Right-click DhcpConnEnableBcastFlagToggle, and then click Modify.
      7. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
      8. Close Registry Editor.

Re: Laptop isn't connecting to fibre router

It is not just a problem with Fibre connections, it is a Vista 'thing'. Anyone with Vista who does not feel good messing with the Registry can find a 'Fixit' here-
Windows Vista cannot obtain an IP address from certain routers or from certain non-Microsoft DHCP servers
