      Question Introduction & (several) questions

      Hello.

This is my first post, so also my greeting!

A Canadian designer, living in London, I am a relatively new Sky user, though a reasonably heavy internet user.
Hopefully, as I have several, I am able to ask more than one question in a post. These questions have been prioritised - from most of interest / pressing, to least.

Thanks for any time given, to answering!

      1) Change Login password?

I know that a person would have to get access to my router, in order to make changes, but you never know. I'd like to change the default router login password. I was told that the default password "Sky" - to the default user "Admin" could not be changed, which alarmed me.
I've had many routers and every one of them allowed me to change the login password. Can I change it and, if so, how?

      2) Limit wireless speed / prioritise connections?

In the past, I have been directly connected to routers with Ethernet cables. I've had people connected to those routers, who would stream and slash my speed enormously. I'd like to share my connection, but not to my cost.

If I decide to share my internet connection, via wireless - with a house-mate, could I either:

2a. Limit the speed of the wireless connection, so that the other person cannot start to stream and interfere with use?
2b. Prioritise connections - so that my wired connection (which is what I use when home) will get the lion's share of the speed and the wireless connection will get whatever is left?

      3) Sagem F@ST 2504 or Sagemcom 2504N?

The box has the name "Sagemcom" at the top, but the model reads "PACK F@ST 2504N SKY" so, when I filled out my registration profile, I wasn't sure which to choose. When logging into the router itself, I see "Sagemcom F@ST2504n". I chose the latter, purely because of "Sagemcom", but that name doesn't include "F@ST" and so seems unclear.

      4) Router upgrade?

After logging into my modem, and clicking the "Maintenance" tab, I see "Router upgrade". What does this mean? Clicking that, I see "Locate and Select the Upgrade File from your Hard Disk:". I don't have any files, on my hard disk, relevant to the router. How do I upgrade, if I can? How would I do a firmware update, if I can? Same thing?

      5) Channel / Mode?

From the Setup tab, I see "Channel" and "Mode". I suppose Channel choice depends on what other people in my area are using. Is that the case? Either way, is there a "best" channel to choose or should I just keep with "Auto".
Similarly, Mode is something I am unsure of. I've never seen "54g", but I have the options: "54g Auto", "54g Performance" and "54g LRS". Is there a "best" or should that also be left at "Auto".

      6) Port forwarding / optimal Gaming

I've found a page or two on port forwarding (for utorrent), but they seemed a little old or any attached videos were incomplete. Could anyone suggest a good guide, for how to do that?
Similarly, I am a (PC) gamer. I'm familiar with pretty much every software-based method to tweak my settings. Is there anything I can do to the router, to improve performance? If so, what and is there a guide?

      Thanks again, folks!

      What colour is the router?

Does it look like this one?

You don't need to do anything, when there is an update, then Sky will push it to you automatically.

      If it is the router I posted an image of;

      1) type (or click this ) http://192.168.0.1/ in your browser then go to it
      2) Click further diagnostic help
      3) User - admin Pass - sky
      4) click set password at the top
      5) type in old password (sky) then choose a new one, then repeat, then click apply

It's the Sagem F@ST2504n Router in that case.

I have mine on Channel 11 and 54g auto

You can leave the Channel on Auto, it really depends what the signal is like etc

So if poor, try a number out of the list, until you get the better performance. But tbh most of the default settings in the router are fine as they are.

If there is a lot of people using wireless in the surrounding area, then choosing a number is sometimes better. ie Your neighbours may be using all the other channels (not on your router) around you.

You'll probably accuse me of nit-picking but, with tech, details often matter.

I don't have that choice. My choices are: HERE

I could choose the closest match to your suggestion:
      Sagem F@ST 2504
but it does not have that "n" at the end.

Ahh, Sagem / Sagemcom don't matter, same thing as far as I know.

There is only the one Sagem 2504 'n' router.

      Re: Introduction & (several) questions

I have changed all of them to Sagem, to lessen any confusion. (and added the F@ST bit)
