Exclamation VPN / Remote Desktop Connection problems

      Hi,

I have a Sky unlimited broadband package through the standard DSL router they provide.

I have no problems at all connecting to the internet with any wireless device.

The problem comes when I use my laptop to try and access my work computer via a remote desktop connection whilst connected to my works VPN network (to which I connect fine).

I have rang Sky about the problem and the guy basically said that it's a problem their aware of and that it is caused because the router is restricted.

The person from Sky then told me to try this particular website because there is a way unrestricted the router but they are not allowed to say how.

Does anyone know anything about this???? Please help!

NB - The laptop I'm using is a MacBook Pro, don't know if this makes any difference.

      Thanks,

Re: VPN / Remote Desktop Connection problems

By the way the router I'm using is made by d-link, I got it from sky about 3 months ago.

      Cheers,

Re: VPN / Remote Desktop Connection problems

Once you've connected via VPN can you ping the computer on your work network that you normally connect to?

You probably have a hostname or IP address that you enter into the Remote Desktop Connection app on your mac, this might be something like '10.1.2.3' or 'somepc.company.com', obviously replace the details you have with what I'm quoting in this reply.

The first step on your macbook is to open a terminal window (Applications > Utilities > Terminal), then type in:

      ping 10.1.2.3
What output do you get? Hopefully you will see something like

      PING 10.1.2.3 (10.1.2.3) 56(84) bytes of data.
      64 bytes from 10.1.2.3: icmp_seq=1 ttl=54 time=40.5 ms
      64 bytes from 10.1.2.3: icmp_seq=2 ttl=54 time=41.9 ms
If that works, the next thing to try is to telnet into the RDP port on the remote system using the following command.

      telnet 10.1.2.3 3389
If that just comes back with the text

      Trying 10.1.2.3
and eventually times out, then the problem could be caused by a number of things:

      1. Something is blocking the comms between your macbook and work PC on the RDP ports. It could be a firewall on your work PC, your ADSL router or even the router hardware at your office.
      2. Your computer at work is configured with a dynamic IP address, and the IP address has changed. You'd need to confirm this with the IT people at your office. Always use a hostname (somepc.company.com) when available.
      3. RDP isn't enabled on your office PC (it isn't on most by default).

If you are given a hostname to connect with, try the command

      host somepc.company.com
      If you get the message

      Host somepc.company.com not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)
, then you have an incorrectly configured VPN connection.

Re: VPN / Remote Desktop Connection problems

Thanks for your reply. I'll try that.

I should add that I can connect the VPN without any problems its just the MS remote desktop connection app that never connects when I'm at home and connected to my sky network.

I can connect remotely without any problems on any other network (cafes, hotels, friends houses etc).
