Try setting the router to different channels. There is a possibility that something else is interfering with the channel you are using.

1, 6, 11 & 13 are the best to work with as they don't overlap with each other.

If you have been using inSSIDer, you may have some good indication which channels are good where you are.

What channels are in use in your area?

Try going to the manufacturers site and download and install the latest drivers for your wireless card.

we are using 13 there is 11, 7 and 1 being usedbut they are weak signals. Its not my laptop that is the issue when it happens all devices connected drop, it reconnects fairly quickly.

Try channel 4, that is the only one available to you which is not over-lapped. It may make no difference, but it may

Do you have your router stood on end on its stand? Lying flat can cause overheating which could effect the wireless.

Does it only happen when your mum is streaming music?

Hi srry for the delay thanks for your input but I keep it upright and changing the channel has no real effect.

It does seem to only happen when she is downloading the music off my laptop onto hers but I don't understand why it can't be using all the bandwith on the wireless. (its done using home sharing on itunes between the 2 laptops nothing to do with internet).

With laptops it would probably be easier and much faster using a cable connection. All you need is a crossover ethernet cable. Plug it into the 2 laptops and it will transfer anything, probably 5-10 times the speed of wireless.
