Wireless connection issues - works without security

Hi my brother is experiencing problems connecting to the internet wirelessly via his laptop.

He currently uses the Sky Sagem black router.

I have got him to test connecting to the router wirelessly with a WPA key, WEP key and no security at all. The only option that worked is when no security was selected.

The weird thing is his friend who lives at the same flat as him is able to connect wirelessly with the WPA key applied and with no security applied but for some reason would not with the WEP key applied. They both use different laptops, which both have in built wireless capabilities but my brother uses Windows Vista Home Premium and his friend uses Windows XP.

WPA Key - The network is found in range and connects with limited connectivity. When trying to use the internet I get a 'page can not be displayed' error message.

WEP Key -The network is once again found in range but when trying to connect to the network an error is returned stating that the settings don't match between the router and the wireless connection. As a result there is still no Internet connection available. FYI - My brother used the 64bit WEP key.

Please can someone help because I am exhausted both mentally and with suggestions to fix it!

If any more information is required to help diagnose the problem please let me know.

      Thanks in advance.

Probably an out of date driver. You need to find out what wireless adapter your brothers laptop has got and then go to the manufacturers site and update it.

If unsure post the exact laptop and wireless adaptor model and I'll look it up for you.

Re: Wireless connection issues - works without security

Hi thanks for the speedy response, the laptop is a Sony Vaio, model number: VGN NR32L. Not too sure how to find out what network adapter is being used but it is the built in, default one that comes with the laptop when purchased new.

I noticed that on this thread: Limited Connectivity, Vista, Works with cable, Sky Support gave up, can you solve it?

The user seemed to have a very similar problem however I can not really get my head around all the tech talk on how they solved it???

      Thanks again

Looks like it's an intel adapter. Go to this website: Intel® Driver Update Utility and run the utility. Update your driver if a new one is found and then connect to your router using WPA. If it still gives you the limited connectivity error then go to CMD and type 'ipconfig /all' and copy paste your stats here.

Incase you don't know how to get to CMD: How to get to a MS-DOS prompt or Windows command line.

Re: Wireless connection issues - works without security

I have had major headaches with my wife's laptop and her wireless card.

The problem is that certain routers seem to have a real problem with certain adaptors and it seems like the greater the age difference between the 2 the bigger the problem is.

I have solved mine now by getting her a brand new wireless n card and access point with the same chipset in both.

lo and behold all working smoothly.

hopefully there are newer drivers for your laptop as I found that support at times for laptop hardware is practically non-existant.

Hi I have got my brother to go onto the Intel update site however upon running the updating utility it states that the hardware is unknown or unsupported.

The name of the wireless adapter is listed as follows: LAN Express ASIEEE802.11G PCI-E Adapter.

This is the original driver as per the sony support website: Atheros 7.2C_7.3.1.127.zip

The bit in bold above could be your problem. Is your brother using his laptop as a switch/bridge? If not he needs to uninstall the MAC Bride Miniport from device manager or remove all adapters from the bridge (right click and remove from bridge in device manager).

Delete any networks you may have in your windows network settings. Download the driver above and install it. Conduct a fresh scan and see if it connects. Then post your ipconfig /all again.

      Hi thanks again for replying!

Yea he does use a bridge, for connecting his Xbox 360 wirelessly to the Internet.

Is there a way to keep the bridge but also to get his laptop to connect to the Internet wirelessly?

      Thanks

Re: Wireless connection issues - works without security

It was just a troubleshooting step to see if it connects in normal mode. Your laptop can negotiate a valid ip address just fine so it's either your bridge configuration or your network adapter. Like Adrian explained some routers and adapters just don't mix.

Re: Wireless connection issues - works without security

I think the problem may be that the bridge address is the same as the router. The OS automatically gives it an server address of 192.168.0.1. What I would do first is disable the bridge and see if the laptop connects.

If it does, the only way round this I know is to change the address of the router to 192.168.1.1 and the DHCP range the same. The laptop will then connect with an 192.168.1.xx address and allow the bridge to operate on 192.168.0.1.

I don't think there is any way to change the address when using bridge mode, but I could be wrong.
