      Connecting Notebook to Wireless Network

      Hallo All
I've had SKY wireless for some time now without much bother.
However, I've just got a 7" Wireless Notebook & can't work out, for the life of me, how you get it on the Wireless Network.

It's probably simple once you know how but unfortunately I don't!

      Advice please.

      Thanks- Pete

Re: Connecting Notebook to Wireless Network

You will have to scan for wireless networks in your area and choose your network from these. You will then connect to your router using the security key which can be found on the side of the router.

If you tell us what make/model your notebook is and what Operating System it is running then it might be easier to help.

Thanks for coming back so quickly XD.
I can't get to scan - I don't have a make or model (can't read Chinese!), the OS is "Windows Embedded CE6.0" which I've never come across before, altho' I am hoping the previous owner finds the Handbook which they are trying to find.

Re: Connecting Notebook to Wireless Network

There might be a hardware switch for toggling wifi on and off on your device. Make sure if this exists it is set to 'On'.

You could also go to device manager and see if a driver exists for wifi.

Re: Connecting Notebook to Wireless Network

All I've managed to do is to get the Notebook to scan for & show my network name.
When I try to go further it just tries & then comes up with "Connecting to Host" then "The PPPoE Access Concentrator is not responding".

I can't even find a "Change/Remove" so that I can see what is on the harddrive even the handbook, such as it is, says there is one!

      HELP!!!!!!

Re: Connecting Notebook to Wireless Network

Would this be an eBay purchase from China or USA? If it is I read a piece somewhere about it, the Cnet forum I think, to the effect that they were pretty useless and not worth the money as the wireless was just about unusable. It was the Windows Embedded CE6.0 I remember, an OS for consumer devices, cameras and phones ..

Try disabling the security in the router and see if you can connect.

Re: Connecting Notebook to Wireless Network

I quite understand your view. I can't say for sure it's a Chinese bit of junk as I bought it second hand.
Just in case I can get something out of it, I will bother you for another bit of help if I may,
My PC recommends I get my "home" info onto a flash drive, then put that into my wireless router then back to PC. Snag!!
My SKY supplied Netgear router doesn't have a USB port.
( I can almost hear your comment "not only a naff Notebook but he's also try to do something with a SKY bit!")

However I thought I'd just mention it in case there may be a way round the "no USB" on the router.

      We can all hope!!

      Regards,

      Pete

I think that would only apply if you were trying to set up a network, which you are not, you are only trying to connect the netbook.

The part I don't understand is the reference to PPPoE, Sky don't use that. That may be why it is not connecting. The only thing I can suggest is that you give the netbook fixed IP settings if you can find where to put them in -
      IP address 192.168.0.100
      Subnet........255.255.255.0
      Gateway 192.168.0.1

Also check in the router setting in the Wireless setup section that the Wireless Station Access List has not been enabled. This would cause the connection to be refused.

Re: Connecting Notebook to Wireless Network

      I'm afraid I back folks!

      Where have I got to?

Well, I've managed to reach a point where the Notebook is shown in the tool tray as being connected to the Router but, in spite fo that, when I try to get to Google by IE, I now get

      "HTTP 400 - Bad request
      Internet Explorer"

While fiddling about I did manage to get to Google twice, (wirelessly), but now I can't get back - just the above message. I presume that, if I could just find it again, it is possible to get there!

As is obviously apparent, I'm not IT competent, but hope someone who is, can help me jump this, (I hope), last hurdle.

      Hopefully yours

      Pete

      1- Clear Cookies
2- Flush DNS (Go to CMD and type 'ipconfig /flushdns'
3- Make sure you are not connecting through a proxy. Go to Control Panel -> Internet Settings -> Connections Tab -> LAN Settings and make sure 'automatically detect settings' is ticked and 'proxy server' is unticked.
