Sky - Wireless disconnecting whole net?

      Hi all,

I have recently switched to Sky Broadband from AOL and I'm using the Sagemcom F@ST2304 Router which Sky sent to me.

I have no problems with Broadband connection right now, I have a PC connected with an ethernet cable that has no connection problems either.

But my wireless connection seems faulty, I can connect to the Sky Router with wireless devices such as my iPod Touch 4g, Xbox 360, Mac Laptop ok and have good connection. But after about 5-10 mins the wireless connection will disconnect and one of the following will occur:

      - My broadband connection completely goes off, comes back when I reset router
      - The wireless icon disappears on the router (from green to nothing)

      Modem Status: Connected
      DownStream Connection Speed: 2987 kbps
      UpStream Connection Speed: 800 kbps
      VPI 0
      VCI 38

      Wireless Port
      Name (SSID) SKYD02D8
      Region: Europe
      Current Channel: 11
      Mode: Auto
      Wireless AP: enable
      Broadcast Name: enable

Incase any of this information is needed

The devices i've been using wirelessly when the router disconnects are all on my Access List under "Trusted Wireless Stations".

Also incase this makes a difference, I have a cordless phone about 8 metres away from my Router which I have moved as far away as possible for now and a digital TV right next to my router.

I have been searching google for answers for the past 2 nights and haven't been able to find anyone having the same problem as me.

Thanks for any help you can give in advance, if I'm unable to resolve this issue here by Monday, i'll contact Sky by phone to get help.

Re: Sky - Wireless disconnecting whole net?

Unfortunately the problem that you are describing is the known issue with the Sagem 2304n Router.

We are waiting for Sky to release a firmware update which will hopefully correct this and other issues.

The only options available for the moment are:

      * turn the WiFi off on the router
      * use another device to connect via WiFi
      * break Sky's T&Cs and use your own WiFi router

Depending on what you have available, there are a few choices for the device that you use.

A good option for many people would be to make use of an old WiFi router that you may have lying around. There are instructions on this forum for completing this task and it should be fairly easy to accomplish.

Another option is to use a Wireless Extender, connecting it via a cable to the Sky Router. These cost from 30-100.

If you want to take the route to use your own router, there are instructions for doing this on this forum.

None of these are particularly brilliant, but unfortunately are necessary if you wish to use WiFi for the moment. There are various threads on this forum that you may be interested in reading to see who things are progressing, including a thread on suggestions about complaining about the router.

      Thanks for the reply.

I still have the Netgear router I was using with AOL, Netgear DG834PN Router.. I'll check around the forum for instructions on how to switch the routers and hopefully fix the problem.

If possible could you please post a link if you come across any instructions.

      Thanks again!

Essentially you'll need to extract the log in details from the Sagem router:

      Extracting Sky Router passwords

      https://www.cm9.net/skypass/

The VPI/VCI settings are as per your first post: 0 / 38.

You can set the WiFi security however you wish (i.e. any SSID, password and encryption type you want).

Re: Sky - Wireless disconnecting whole net?

      Thanks ^

I was just checking this thread in that section.

I can use my own router.. but the poster mentions:

"This breaches the terms and conditions that you agreed to when signing up to Sky and Sky therefore have the right to kick you off their broadband service"

So I think I should wait for an update or check for a wireless adapter that'll work.

Edit: Thanks for the info Scubbie

Re: Sky - Wireless disconnecting whole net?

For legal reasons it is only fair to remind people that you are breaching the T&Cs. Sky could decide to enforce them at any time. In practise they currently don't seem to be concerned about them.

Technically I can't see any benefit in using a Sky router over any other that offers similar or better specifications. In fact I would argue that technically other routers are better.

If you don't want to chance it, then perhaps piggybacking an old router and disabling the WiFi on the Sagem 2304n would be safer for you.

      Check out this thread:

How to connect two Routers together

The 2nd router could be placed anywhere, so long as it is connected by either an Ethernet cable or a pair of HomePlugs.

Re: Sky - Wireless disconnecting whole net?

      Thanks

I followed the instructions, wireless is working on my Netgear router and im still connected to the net fine.

But now I can't seem to disable the wireless on my Sky Sagem router through 192.168.0.1, I can connect to the router through the browser but when I untick "Enable Wireless Access Point" and click apply I get:

      No data received
Unable to load the web page because the server sent no data.
      Here are some suggestions:
      Reload this web page later.
Error 324 (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE): The server closed the connection without sending any data.

I am connected to the Sky Sagem Router through an ethernet cable right now but can't seem to change anything on the Sky router anymore.
