Hello all Im new & have issues with wireless dropping

      Hello all

Im hoping you wonderful folks can help

I am using a brand new laptop, have had 1 replaced because of wireless issues. Im running win 7 and connecting to a sky d-link router.

The wireless just suddenly drops, sometimes upto 5 times a day.

      Any bright ideas.

      Thanks

      Lou

Firstly you have to determine whether the problem lies at the router end or at the laptop end.

      For a start:
-> Go to 192.168.0.1 in your browser
      -> user: admin password: sky
-> Go down on your screen and click 'show statistics'
-> Copy\paste all the information from the new window that opens into this thread.

      1) Your wireless has been up for more than 3 days according to the router stats.
Download this app: inSSIDer | MetaGeek
Run it and analyse the wireless situation in your vacinity

      For instance in my case:

My chosen channel is 2 as I acheive highest signal strength on it. The Rssi tab shows the signal strength; the lower the better.

See how many connections you pick up and choose your router channel accordingly.

      2) Check the properties of your wireless adapter. Make sure you have the latest driver installed and that power managment isn't turning your wireless adapter off.

Re: Hello all Im new & have issues with wireless dropping

Hi guys - An update. Ok channel 6 seems to be my preferred stronger channel. Should I change the router to channel 6. Also I have turned off Kaspersky firewall and so far have had no interuptions. DOes anyone know how I may have Firewall running without having the wireless drop out on me.

      Thanks

      Lou

Re: Hello all Im new & have issues with wireless dropping

I am not sure how many connections have been picked up at your end. Unless there's very few and you can see a channel range is absolutely free, I suggest you change channels on your router one by one while keeping it static and monitoring the stats on inssider. The channel change is immediate and does not require a computer or router restart.

I am not sure how Kaspersky in particular works but usually in firewalls you are able to define trusted zones. Make sure your internet connection is added to a trusted zone. Firewalls also have policies for program access. You need to make sure that your browser or other applications that require internet access (eg: itunes) are allowed access by the firewall.

I wouldn't recommend keeping a firewall off permananently based on my personal experience.

I have changed a couple of settings in Kaspersky to allow tcp and udp and touch wood all is working at the moment.

At the moment I can see 8 networks all using either channel 1, 6 or 11. So do I change channel to say 3 as no one is using that one and just keep monitoring.

      Thanks

Re: Hello all Im new & have issues with wireless dropping

Channel 3 is overlapped by channels 1-5, but if you get a result from it, then use it. Many find that channel 13 is best, although it is overlapped by Channels 11 & 12, very few use it.
