setting up wi fi on iphone 4

Sorry, its probably a silly question, and im probably posting in the wrong place, but....i have just upgraded to an iphone 4, I want to activate the wifi setting. I am getting familiar now with the handset having had it for a few hours, but when i try and activate the wireless option though my home connection its asking for a password. I have had a look and i think i have WEP incription......how do i find the password to input it into my iphone?

      cheers!

The default password (or Network Key) is on the coloured label stuck on the side/bottom of your Sky Router, under the SSID.

More than likely this was also printed on a piece of card that also arrived with the router.

It is all CAPITAL LETTERS, no numbers & not lowercase. The password is case sensitive.

Thanks guys, bit I tried the two codes which are on the bottom of the router....and to no joy. I used the correct upper case but nothing. Any other ideas?

It there anything else that you have which connects via WiFi? Does this work?

Also do you have the means to connect to the router through a PC or MAC on a wired connection?

Re: setting up wi fi on iphone 4

No I don't have any other connections, only the laptop. Regarding other means of connection, I have the ethernet cable.
Can I do anything? What about adding a new wi fi connection? When the pop up box fit wi fi opens on the iPhone there is a new connection box.....would this work and if so what do I do, as it's been sooooo long since I messed about with my wifi or router?

      Thanks

Re: setting up wi fi on iphone 4

Your Sky router by default connects by using WPA encryption and not WEP. If you have your phone set to WEP you need to change it to WPA.

You might find it easiest to turn off encryption on the router and phone until you establish a working connection then apply WPA after you are sure everything is working.

Re: setting up wi fi on iphone 4

To add to what dms05 has mentioned, there are a range of posts elsewhere on the web that discuss issues with iPhones connecting to WiFi.

There are a couple of repeated solutions that might help:

      1. Reset network settings. Touch Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset Network Settings.

      2. Still having problems? Touch Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset All Settings. Warning: You will loose all of your preferences.

      3. For YouTube problems on jailbroken iPhones try installing youtubeFix from Cydia or another package installer.

      4. Restore your iPhone as a new phone. This is a slow and tedious process but will reset your iPhone as if it was new from the factory. Although this should fix all of the above issues, you will have to reload your contacts and media onto the iPhone from the computer manually. To restore:

      - Connect your iPhone to the computer.
      - Run iTunes.
      - Under the Summary tab select Restore.
      - Select backup if you wish. When restoring as a new iPhone you will not use the backup.
      - When the process is complete the iPhone will restart.
      - When the Set Up You iPhone screen appears select Set up as a new iPhone.

Of course, after restoring a jailbroken iPhone you will lose the jailbreak and unlock functionality.
I was also going to suggest that you sign into your router and double check not only the encryption, but also that the WiFi password hasn't been changed.

Re: setting up wi fi on iphone 4

Using the laptop, you need to perform the following:

      Open a browser

Type '192.168.0.1' into the address line and press return

      Enter the username & password:

      Username: admin
      Password: sky

      Click the 'SETUP' tab

Double check that the password beside 'WPA-PSK Security Encryption' is what you were putting in. If not, then this was your problem.

If it was correct, then below 'Security Options' select the button beside 'WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)'

Type in a 'pass phrase' of your own and click 'Generate'

Note down the alpha-numeric code. This will become your new Network Passcode.

Click 'Apply' and retry signing in with your iPhone.

Your laptop will also need the password changing on the WiFi connection as you have successfully changed the password now.
