      Connection problem

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me with my connection problem:

I have moved into a houseshare with existing Sky Broadband (Sagem router). Three computers are connected and working fine. I have then connected my work laptop on the first attempt by entering the 8 digit network key from the router. This laptop runs on XP.

My personal computer is proving much more difficult, this runs on Vista. The 8 digit network key doesn't work (CAPS and all) and it asks for a 5 or 15 digit key (I think). My WLAN is switched on and works because it picks up other networks and I have used it on other networks. I tried connecting using the ethernet cable and going to 192.168.1.0 but I can't even get the internet working that way.

I've scoured this and other forums looking for a solution but cannot seem to find the cure. It's driving me mad! Can anyone help??

      Re: Connection problem

If you connect by ethernet you should get on the internet by click the IE or FF icon, there is not need to type the router address. Which is 192.168.0.1 by the way, not as you have typed it. When you try to connect by ethernet, make sure you have switched off the wireless.

The Wireless problem looks like a problem with WEP v WPA, make sure Vista is set to use WPA encryption, it seems to be set for WEP.

This tutoial shows how to connect Vista manually. Make sure the drop down box is set to WPA-PSK, it is WEP by default.

      Re: Connection problem

Thanks so much for the help. I'm not sure why I couldn't connect with the ethernet cable (I had wireless switched off for that) but it doesn't matter now because I'm connected wirelessly, having changed from WEP to WPA.

Thanks so much for your help!
