Please Please Help Head Battered !!

      Hi

I am a returning sky user switching from BT Vision and broadband to the full Sky package.

I have a good tech knowledge on routers and PC's but I am stumped by this problem. Please can someone help.........

I received my DSL-2640 router today and have set all my laptops, games consoles and mobile phones up without problem. However I have a PC situated in an upstairs bedroom that is not wireless and "was" connected without problems to my old BT home hub via 2 Comtrend Powerline adaptors.

I presumed I could just plug these adaptors into my new Sky router and all would be plain sailing. However after 3 hours I give in. My PC will not obtain an IP address and cannot ping the SKY router or vice versa. I have reset the Comtrend adaptors and tried but nothing. I have even swapped out the old Comtrend adaptors for new ones that BT sent me before I left them and even the new ones dont work.

Looking on the SKY router config page I cannot see these adaptors as devices. Even though their LED's light up correctly and LED on their respective ports on the SKY router also lights up.

I have googled for ages but not seen a definitive fix so here I am.

      I beg for help !

      Thank you in advance.

Have you tried connecting a laptop through the homeplugs?

      Good idea Isitme

Laptop works fine on both old and new Comtrend adaptors.
Ip address issued and I can surf the net.

On the desktop I just get local access only and no access to the Internet.

Out of interest laptop is Win7 and PC is Win Vista

Panic over - God I feel stupid.......

      its always the basic things......

Realised whilst doing some more tests that the IP address was not changing whenever I powered off the PC and adaptors. then it dawned on me that years ago I had set static IP addressing for this PC.

Enabled obtain IP adress auto and Hey Presto alll working.

Thank you for your initial help, I couldnt see the wood for the trees and you helped me get past it !

My next suggestion would have been to give the PC a fixed address, but never mind, you have solved it. Thanks for letting us know, many don't bother and just leave the post in limbo.
