How do I get wireless N?

Hi. I've got a sagem f@st 2504 router with sky BB.

I've recently picked up an iPad and wouldn't mind trying wireless N to see if surfing is any faster.

What do I need to buy to get N?

      Cheers.

A new router? I take it I can't completely change the sky sagem router?? Do I need to plug the new router into the sagem?

You can change it but its technically against T&Cs - plenty do, though

What would be easier and cheaper?

Re: How do I get wireless N?

easier - get a wireless N router (with or without ADSL modem) and plug one LAN output as the input into the N. If you get one with a modem you could extract your Sky password and use it as your only router.

cheaper - not much either way, but the cheapest option isn't always the best. Do some research and you'll see. Personally I would go for a 5GHz router with Gigabit ethernet as it offers more choice on channels, is less likely to be affected by other wireless kit in and around the home and provides fast cable transfer if you need it (e.g. to a NAS unit). I would keep the Sagem just to make the connection to the Sky network.

Re: How do I get wireless N?

The cheapest way of going N, albeit actually 150mbps Lite N is this TP Link-
      TP-Link TL-WR740N Broadband Wireless-N Router (150Mbps)

It received a high rating in a recent Computer Shopper review and is more than fast enough to handle HD streaming and DSL internet speeds.. Ideally it would be placed in the DMZ of the Sky router to allow full use of its facilities.

The cheapest way to go full N would probaly be its big brother, which would connect to the Sky router in the same way.-

      Thanks for your opinions.

      Both those products look good.

I think my line speed is about 5.5 Mb.

      Would it be worth it.

Re: How do I get wireless N?

Depends what you want to do! For general browsing it won't make the slightest bit of difference in speed terms but should increase wireless range and reliability.

The Sagem has a nominal speed of 54Mbps, or 10 times your broadband line speed. Only if you move data around your network, or have several things connected to it will you see a difference with an N router.

Re: How do I get wireless N?

The biggest advantage of the N standard is not so much its speed, but its better range. If you are having difficulty connecting and maintaining the connection, adding an N router would help.
