i get about 6.6mbps when i put my laptop next to the sky router but as soon as it moves away the signal starts to drop.
i have my laptop in my room drectly above the router by one floor and the signal strength still have about 4 bars out of 5 but the speed goes down to about 0.1- 1 mbps.
i was wondering if i need a new router or a new wireless card for my laptop.
another option would be a homeplug possibly?

also is the speed im getting next to the router the best i can expect ?

      thanks for all the help

What wireless channel is in use on the router and have you run a tool like netstumbler to see what wireless is in use around you?

If you are using windows 7, I think the cli command "netsh wlan show all" should give you a list of wifi networks and the channels they are using.

Or you could try this inSSIDer Wi-Fi Scanner | MetaGeek

Ideally you want to be 2 or 3 channels away from other users, because the channels overlap.

You are in an overlapping channel(3), try changing to Channel 6, which appears to be clear.

Your speed is not bad for your attenuation.

channel 13 is usually clear and gd to use. try 802.11b only if ur on a sagem router or a dlink make sure that there is nothing arround the router that can impede the signal - glass metal - chordless phones baby monitors electrical devices energy efficent light bulbs ( believe it or not) also keeping ur pc away from these devices too
