      Issues connecting to local server(s)

Up until last month I had two boxes running Windows Home Server connected to my local network (via ethernet) to a BT HomeHub. If I wanted to remote desktop either one of them I'd use Remote Desktop Connection (for Mac) and would simply input the servers name - homeserver or datavault.

(I only ever RDC internally - I do not wish to remote externally.)

I've now switched to Sky and use the router they provided me with (D-Link) that then plugs into an AirPort Extreme, now when I attempt to RDC either of the homeservers im forced to input the servers IP address which can be pain as they dont have a fixed ip address.

All devices connect to the AirPort Extreme.

Is there something I can do on my Sky router to allow me to connect to my servers using the machine name and not have to track down use an ip address anytime?

On a seperate note on the of the servers acts as in internal webserver, and it used to be the case that i'd type in "http://homeserver/" and I would be presented with the page, this no longer works either.

      Many thanks,

      Tom

I think this is a feature of the Home Hub which will not work with the Sky router, which requires an IP address ..

Your easiest way would be to give your servers fixed addresses and reserve these in the Address reservation list in the router. If for some reason you can't give them fixed addresses, connect them one at a time and reserve the address they are given in the Reserved list. Each time they connect after that, they will be given the same address.

For this to work correctly you need a DNS server which can identify the machines in your network. You may be able to set this up on one of your home servers but i'm not sure.

Re: Issues connecting to local server(s)

using the sky router there is alot of issue with closed ports you may have to open the ports, dns server is not required as the pcs can all identify each other by name as they are on the same LAN. cant remember off the top of my head how to open ports on the sky router but there should b a post here somewhere.
