Question iPhone 3GS disconnecting from Sky wifi

      Hi there,

We've just got Sky Broadband in.

It works fine on the laptop but there seems to be a bit of a problem with my iPhone.

It constantly disconnects from the wifi. Every other time I pick up the phone to go online I have to go back into settings and connect to the Sky broadband.

Sometimes I'll get a message saying "unable to connect to Sky...", although If I leave it and try again a few seconds later it's fine.

It's infuriating! My friend has sky broadband too and I've connected to his with his password and it works perfectly. Anytime I'm there it connects automatically and it never gets disconnected.

A friend has suggested it could simply be the fact that the Sky router (sagem) isn't great and as it's in another room (our router is near the phone line in the hall) that could be what is causing it.

Must be a very poor router indeed if that's the case.

Another friend said it could be a security issue with the router.

Not that technically minded about these sorts of things, but it's proving really annoying to have to do it every time I pick up the phone. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Change the channel on the router from 'auto' to something else.

Open a browser on your main computer and type 192.168.0.1 into the address bar. Username is 'admin' and password is 'sky' without the quotation marks. Click set-up in the top left. Change the channel from 'auto' to something else. Click apply at the bottom of the page. Now reconnect the iPhone if need be and then monitor the connection on your iPhone.

One user has report success by disabling the 3g, might be worth trying if you still have problems.

Odd thing about this - what User05 suggested works perfectly, but every now and again the stops working once more, and I have to go back into the router settings and change it to another number!

      Is that normal?

It is possible there is another network nearby using a channel which overlaps yours. Download Inssider from the link below and use it to discover the channels in use in your area. Set your router channel to one as far from those in use as possible. Channel 13 is often clear.

Check with Inssider first, channel 13 may be well used in your area.

Re: iPhone 3GS disconnecting from Sky wifi

I have the same problem. I have a sky Sagem router. We have Iphone 3gs, Iphone4, Ipad and Ipods. All of them regularly disconnect from the router. We also have a number of laptops running XP, these are all very stable and have no problems.

The router channel is set to manual and at the moment is 11. The odd thing is that every time I change the channel all the I-products stabilize for a short while, maybe a day, then get progressivly worse! It does not matter which channel I select. I've also used wififofum on a pda to detect which channels are being used in my area so that I keep off them.

My I-products have 3g set to off.

Prior to Sky broadband I used a Netgear router with AOL. Although the AOL service was appalling the I-products didn't keep disconnecting.

      Any advise would be appreciated.

      Thanks, Daryl.
