This usually means the drivers need updated or the adapter is just too old to support WPA.
Did you go to the laptop manufacturers site and download and install the latest drivers?

I couldnt find the official drivers, the laptop has built in wireless and it was fine supporting WPA with the router from virgin media.

You were probably facing the infamous 'unidentified network' vista issue. It happens from time to time with the new d-link routers and vista when the router's encryption is on WPA/WPA2 mixed mode. Updating the drivers usually sorts it.

Or just the make/model of the wireless card.
To answer your other question yes WEP is highly insecure and can be broken very quickly by someone with the know-how.

You will get the latest drivers here. Your LT comes with 3 different adapters so you will have to download the correct one.
      Laptop Driver Downloads:

Use the drop down boxes to navigate to the download page.
