Try changing your key, make it something really simple like aaaabbbb.
Straw clutching really but you could also try changing to WEP, just in case there is a compatibility problem with your adapter and the router.

Tried the simple pass, and switching, still nothing, is there any way round this, without using a cable? It does work when i use an ethernet cable

If you are able to connect without security, and fail with it, something is wrong with the setup within your laptop. The only other thing I can think of to try, is getting the latest drivers for your adapter from the manufacturer, then uninstall and reinstall the wireless adapter. If you get the option, just install the driver, don't install any additional software. You will then automatically use the Windows management software.

It was a fault with the drivers, maybe they were outdated, the laptop is a good 5 year old now, thanks very much for your time and help, i really appreciate it, cheers
