      Wireless Help Pls

      Hey there,

Just had sky broadband installed in our student house.

The router is on the ground floor because that is where the phoneline is. The router is the one they provide. Furthermore Im on the 2nd Floor and the signal is terrible and my laptop does not connect at all. However every where else is fine.

My question is, how can I improve the signal from the ground floor. Access Point? Range Extender?

      Thanks

      Re: Wireless Help Pls

Login in to the router and change the wireless channel from Auto to one from the drop-down list, start at 13 and work backward.

      Hey

Thanks for your reply. Ive changed it to 6, however its still not as strong as it could be. Would these powerline homeplugs be any good in this situation.

      Re: Wireless Help Pls

You can buy some Commtrend ones from e-bay, they are 200mbps and usually sell quite cheap compared to the others because BT supply them free with one of their packages, some people have no need for them and sell them on for a few 's

I use the Solwise 85mbps ones and have never had any problems even when streaming HD content to my xbox, cost about 75 for three.

I would have got the Commtrend ones though if they were around when I bought mine.

Ive heard that the homeplugs can get quite hot. Is that just when they are in use or just in general.

Dont want them burnin up or anything lol

      Re: Wireless Help Pls

They can get quite warm when in use but no hotter than the mains adapter for your router. If they were liable to burst into flames then they wouldn't be able to be sold in this country.

Try other channels first, 13 downwards. 6 is heavily used.
