Does anyone here get their full wireless speed?

I've been having a lot of problems getting a decent download speed while connected wireless. I've been through tons of changes and nothing seems to improve it.

I'm basically getting 17.5Mb sync, run a speed test when wireless and get 1Mb... Connect an RJ45 and i get the full 17.5Mb speed.

I've already done TCP Doctor, changed channels, change wireless adapter, no other electronic device near, no cordless phone etc.

But just been reading online and one site was saying you will never get anywhere near the full speed with wireless:

Why isn't my wireless operating at full speed?

      When Is 54 Not Equal to 54? A Look at 802.11a, b, and g Throughput - O'Reilly Media

      So my question is:

Does anyone here get their full broadband speed when using wireless. Ie Connected at say 10Mb, do a speed test when connected wireless and it comes back as 10Mb.

Just incase I'm wasting my time.

(Have already gone back to RJ45)

You never get the full speed with wireless.
The best thing to do is change the channel you are using, start from channel 13 and work down until you find the best performance.

wireless is all but useless on the Sagem fast max 54g. Other routers like netgears have much better wireless than the Sagem.

You will not normally get the same speed on wireless as you do with ethernet, but you should do much better than you are. One thing you can try is going to the wireless adapters manufacturers site and get the latest drivers. When you have done that go the the Add/Remove list and remove any software connected with the adapter, then go to the Device Manager and uninstall it there. Reboot your PC and install the latest drivers.

What are you using to connect to the wireless connection? You could simply have incompatible kit. You say you have changed the wireless adapter - USB? Have you tried different makes of adapter?

I'm using the sagem and get pretty good wireless speeds. See below for my current speedtest - reporting 18Mbps downstream on a 19.1 sync. That's to a MacBook using the internal wireless card.

Inssider which is quoted in someone's sig is an excellent tool for identifying free channel space.

It's likely to be your USB WiFi adaptor and/or it's management software. One simple thing is to use a USB extension lead and move the USB WiFi dongle around to maximise reception.

Re: Does anyone here get their full wireless speed?

I'm also surprised he says he gets the full 17.5mbps synch speed in his speed test whilst connected directly. Even connected via ethernet you still see some overhead taken from the actual speed. I would expect something more like 16mbps.

Change you wireless channel and set the router to operate in g mode only. And as mentioned get and run a copy of insidder to see what channels are being heavily used.

Oh, and use a different speed tester, the one on this site seems to be accurate and more consistent.
