      setting up wireless on vista

      Hi guys,

Sorry if thus has already been covered. I was running my wireless connection no problems on my old laptop, which was running on XP. I have just had to buy a new notebook (toshiba L300D-222) which runs using vista premium, and i havent gota clue as ive never used vista before. It is connecting no problems with the ethernet, so i know there are no problems other than setting up my wireless connection. I have tried it with no firewall and it still wont pick up. When i click start-connect to, it shows two wireless connections there. One i asume is next door, the other must be mine, as it has the same SSID number that is printed on the bottom of my router. However when i click connect it is asking for a security key/passphrase. I have tried to type in the network key which is the other number printed on the bottom of my router, but it wont accept this, it says try again using 5 or 13 characters, or 10 or 26 characters. I hope the problems lie with my noobness...........any help would be great guys, please keep it simple though lol.

      cheers!

It looks like it is looking for a WEP key for some reason. The first thing to try is go into the router wireless settings and check what security is enabled. If WPA is enabled in the Security Options, select the Disable option and try to connect. If WEP is selected select WPA, make a note of the key and try to connect. The default WPA key is all capital letters, no numbers.

      Let us know what happens.

If you have not changed to WPA you should, WEP can now be cracked very easily with software readily available on the net.
