Unhappy Please help with my wireless connection

Have been on Sky Broadband Max for a few years, well i still use my desktop but got a new laptop, so changed my desktop into wireless so i could pick up the internet on my laptop......everything worked fine, good speeds on desktop with downloading great on the laptop too but all of a sudden the last 10 days my speeds have dropped dramatically, i did try to change channels and the speed did get better for about a day and then went crashing down again......what can i do, i am so frustrated! Oh i forgot to mention i am using a Belkin wireless usb adapter.

Re: Please help with my wireless connection

With an attenuation of 49.5 db I would expect a headline speed of 6 - 7meg

SkyUser - Potential ADSL2 Line Speed Checker & Calculator

      ADSL2+ Speed Test
We estimate your line is capable of between 6mb to 7mb broadband on an ADSL2+ service.

This ADSL2 Line Speed Calculator is a best guess only, as to the broadband speed that maybe possible on your telephone line. The checker provides results of up to 24mb with the data that is made available to us. This is purely for indication only and should not be classed as the Line Speed that you would receive on any ADSL or LLU product from another ISP.

Is it the same stats connected by wire?

When i used it with the ethernet it wized along, and also did when i first went wireless, i just don't understand why it has dropped to this, i was downloading at 900 mbs sometimes a little less sometimes even more than that and now its like 300 kbs, sorry i don't really understand what you have written not being a computer buff :-)

Can i do nothing about it??

Post your stats using a wired connection.

      Try changing the wireless channel?

What I have written in layman's terms, you are getting about a third of what I would expect to get.

Re: Please help with my wireless connection

Yes i get you, so have you any idea why it has dropped so low? Also by wired connection do you mean plugging in the ethernet cable, if so, i'm sorry but i can't do that at the minute it is nearly 2 in the morning and i can't get behind my desk as i am in a wheelchair and hubby is snoring

Also while i am here is you don't mind, i have like two connection icons in my tray, is that right, i think one is the belkin usb adapter and not sure what the other is but says its a wireless connection and i am connected?

If i put the ethernet cable back in tomorrow, do i just put that in like it was after i have taken out the usb wireles adaptor? Sorry for all the questions, but i just don't know who else to ask!

      Hugs

Re: Please help with my wireless connection

If you can post your stats when hubby is awake and not snoring, this will show us whether the connection is at fault or the wireless adapter. (if the stats are the same wired as wireless then it is the connection if that makes sense)

This would mean using the ethernet cable instead of the wireless connection. It should be just a case of plugging that into the router and the PC and then using that connection so to speak.

As for the 2 connections in your status tray, that could be Windows and the Belkin software etc and so realistically one should be disabled. However, I am absolutely no good with wireless side of things.

Changing wireless channel may help, as a neighbour or someone in you locality may have since been connected, and it could be interfering with yours.

To change it, you could try this:

      http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/view-wireless.html

In the box for Auto 108 change it to B or G (I don't have this router connected) and then it should allow you to change channel above, try changing to 11 or similar, and see if any better.

Re: Please help with my wireless connection

Thanks for explaining. I will do the wired connection tomorrow and let you know, thank you. I have tried changing the channel numbers, i was on 6 that went so slow, so i changed to 11 and it went much much faster, i was delighted for the day, but then it went down real slow again, so i have tried 8, 1, 13, 12 and 6 again all with real slow speeds.

I will do that tomorrow and send a reply

      Thanks again

      Hugs
