More laptop drop out woes !!

I have recently bought a new Acer laptop & am having all sorts of difficulties connecting wirelessly to the internet.

I have a Netgear DG834GT router which is also wired connected to PC, PS3 & XBOX360 - the router is situated near my amp, game consoles & Sky box.

When trying to connect via laptop, I am sat around 6 feet away…… sometimes it will connect first time but then drop out minutes later & then I am unable to connect again. Sometimes I can connect again but will continue to drop out again & again. & then sometimes I cant connect at all.

I have moved router to more central position in room - no difference
I have changed to different channels on router (1,6,11) - no difference
I have switched off all security on router - no difference
I have switched off all AV equipment (ie TV, Sky box) - no difference
I have moved laptop right next to router - no difference
I have pulled hands free phones power from mains - no difference
I have checked power settings on laptop - no difference
Used inSSIDer when i have eventually connected & I seem to get signal strength of about 50...I can see other peoples connections & they have a strength no more than 10 but have moved channels further away but I again get drop outs)

When connected I am getting a d/l rate of around 2 mb/s (my wired PC gets around 3-4mb/s)

I assume it's something to with interference (??) but can anyone help

      Cheers in advance
      André

What operating system are you running? Windows Zero Config or Wireless Zero Config is how Windows controls the device natively. If you have third party software installed (eg. Netgears own software) then this often overides windows.

use a wireless monitor program to tell you all available networks in your area and their channels, make sure the router is not near anything metallic, magnets, and the aerial is connected tightly to the router and has a good clean sight of the room.

another option to try is reseting the router with the big switch on the back to default. am sure theres other things you can try but my brains not working today.. if i can remember anything else then ill post it later

Re: More laptop drop out woes !!

      Cheers guys

To update I am using Vista...i assume this is controlling card - will check tonight.

I have used inSSIDer & this is telling me what other networks are being used. Wife has just advised that line is dropping like mad (at 1pm) & after checking inSSIDer it appears that only 1 other network could be seen...that was channel 1 - i am on channel 13 !

I can see no aerial on Netgear router. I assume the aerial is enclosed inside ?? (it's the black Sky branded, netgear one). Had the laptop sat on the router yet still get drop outs.

Also with these Sky routers, I am able to update firmware ? - thought i read somewhere that Sky has locked this ?

      Driving me mad

Are you sure the wireless is dropping? If the router is losing sync you will lose connection to internet but if you can still access 192.168.0.1 you are ok on the wireless side.

If you have an 'out of the box' install then you are probably using the Acer eNet manager. Try disabling it and using Vista's Manager.

If your connection is continually dropping it may be Vista's built in wireless search 'feature' which is causing the problem. Try downloading Vista anti lag from here Downloads
