Sagem drops all when Vista uploads to NAS

First, thanks for all the helpful posts in this forum. I've spent some time browsing but haven't noticed anyone with my particular problem.

I have 2 laptops connected wirelessly to the Sky Sagem router, one with Vista SP1 and the other with XP. I also have a Netgear NAS connected via cable to the router.

Every single time I transfer files wirelessly from the Vista machine to the NAS via the router, once 10-50MB have been uploaded the Sagem router resets all wireless connections, effectively ending the upload. When this happens, my XP laptop is also disconnected.

Within 5 seconds, both laptops have reconnected to the Sagem router via wireless.

I can transfer files from the NAS to the Vista laptop with no problem. I can also transfer files to and from the NAS using my XP machine with no problem.

I've confirmed that the ADSL connection is not affected and that the router itself is not rebooting - it's just resetting all wireless connections. I've tried several channels (currently on 11), switched between modes (currently 54G Auto), and have adjusted the Vista machine's MTU in steps between 1400-1500. I haven't been able to solve the problem yet.

Anyone else have experience with this issue or any suggestions? Thanks in advance. =)

Is there any way to check if errors are building up during the transfer and causing the router to reset?

Try ticking the Wireless Isolation box in the router. This hides wireless clients from one and other, which will prevent your laptops communicating but both should still be able to speak to your NAS. If you want to swap between your laptops you can always untick it again. It might not work, but it is worth a try, remember to tick Apply if you do it.

Re: Sagem drops all when Vista uploads to NAS

Thanks for both suggestions. I turned on Wireless Isolation and at first it seemed to have solved the problem. I was able to upload about 500MB from my Vista laptop to the NAS before the Sagem reset all wireless connections. This was big improvement over <50MB before that.

However, repeated attempts seemed to have less success and in the end I was being disconnected after about 50MB of upload again. Not sure if that first try was a fluke, or just my router cruelly getting my hopes up!

Smithy99, I'm not sure how to identify the errors. I can see Collisions in the statistics but none are recorded. Any thought on what I should be looking for here?

Re: Sagem drops all when Vista uploads to NAS

It could be you are suffering from Vista's notorious habit of looking for a new connection every 60 seconds. Unfortunately MS have not supplied any way to turn this off. One thing that may work is Vista anti lag. This is a small application which disables this 'feature', the site is German but there is an English language set up. You may want to try it, just start it running and minimise it when you are using the wireless.

I have a Vista laptop and a Netgear SC101. I sometimes back up to the SC101 using wifi with gigs of data taking 3 or 4 hours.
Only thing I can think of is that your wifi card is powering itself down to save battery power. Have you tried doing this when your laptop is running on mains power?
