      Wireless keeps disconnecting

Hi, ive got 2 pc's using wireless on my sky router and 1 via ethernet. Now the 2 that have been using wireless have this week started to get just randomly disconnected. And then a few minutes later it will reconnect. What could be the cause of this?

      Re: Wireless keeps disconnecting

Could be just about anything from your neighbour using his microwave to another wireless router in range on the same channel.

Unless you live out of range of any interference, wireless is becoming a dead loss in crowded Britain. You can try increasing your signal strength by using a different wireless router or attaching a better Wireless access point but there are no guarantees that this will help and all you will do is to drown out the signals from your neighbours so they can't use wireless either.

The better alternative is to use homeplugs. These aren't as convenient if you are using a laptop or a device with no ethernet port but they don't suffer from interference.

you could try changing the channel in the router first, may just be on the same number as a neighbour

Edit: i use homeplugs myself for the computer, but my iphone has no problems even from across the road

      Re: Wireless keeps disconnecting

I had the same problem with my belkin wireless network card so i purchased a netgear wireless network adapter. When i install the wireless usb adapter software i allow this to control my Internet connection. When i did this i don't get any connection, so i reinstalled the software but declined the request and allow windows to do it and now it works. b

This 30 second symptom is typical of poor reception issue -- the adapter is failing to resolve an IP address.

Raise the router above furniture level, put the computer against the wall nearest the router's location, relocate cordless phone base or video sender away from router or computer, move the adapter/router antennas.

Above all play with different channels -- some frequencies work better in some environments -- obviously avoid wifi channels already in use by neighbours and if poss select one 5 channels away from strongest neighbour.

      Re: Wireless keeps disconnecting

Fear not folks. no need to buy a new wireless card or change wireless channels. ive had this problem for ages and it was really starting to get to me. after much messing around i found the problem to be really easy! the problem is the power management setting for the wirless card. it is set to "allow the computer to switch off this device to save power" by default. so by unchecking this option means that it no longer gets cut off every 30 seconds or so. fixed the problem for me

      Re: Wireless keeps disconnecting

If using Vista, especially on a laptop, change the power settings as follows
Open Power Options in Control Panel
      Choose Change plan Settings
      Choose Change Advanced Power Settings
      Expand Wireless Adapter Settings
      Expand Power Saving Mode
      Choose Maximum performance.

This should be the default on a Desktop, but it is worth checking.

As the machines have been working OK for a while, this is unlikely to be the OP's problem, more likely to be a channel issue.

      Re: Wireless keeps disconnecting

MMMm i have the same problem here too.
I can get connected by the wireless but only for a couple of minutes or just 30 secs sometimes.
      Via cable is fine.
I have tried all the channels and have used netstumble to see whose id about and what channel etc but still no joy.

Just find it odd that it connects and lets me surf a bit before dropping connection.
I 'm using a belkin usb G connector on a Fujitsu Laptop running Xp service pack 3 using the sky sagem router.

      cheers

      Will
