      Laptop wireless connection

      Hi guys,

Had Sky Broadband for over a year connected wirelessly via DG934G router to my desktop pc. Works like a dream and never suffered any problems.
Recently acquired a Toshiba Laptop with "Realtek RTL8187B" built-in adaptor.
For some reason I cannot connect this to the router. I've tried everything but suspect it something relatively simple.

My router security is set to WEP. It restricts access to specific devices (netgear adaptor, WIII) via their MAC address ........I think !!! but not sure how to obtain this from the laptop adaptor.

Any advice would be extremely welcome.

      Re: Laptop wireless connection

First, the laptop MAC address should be on a sticky tape on the laptop (probably underneath).

If not, open a CMD window (Start - Run and type CMD) then run ipconfig /all; the Physical Address is the MAC address.

      Regards,

      Felix

Thanks for the prompt reply. Added the MAC to the router but still no luck. I've also changed the channel no. on the laptop adaptor to match router but still no life.

      Any further suggestions?

      Re: Laptop wireless connection

what happens when you try to connect? are you using windows wireless utility or is there a realtek/toshiba wireless utility? have you checked in you device manager(my computer>properties>hardware>device manager>network adapters) to make sure the wireless card is working?

check to see if there are any new drivers out(searching Realtek RTL8187B in google will retrieve you links to some drivers-im not sure if i can post links like this on the forum so thats all i will say) and perhaps try without encryption and if that works then enable WPA-PSK.

      Re: Laptop wireless connection

While trying to connect, disable all wireless security on the router and disable the firewall on the laptop. This should make it much easier to establish a connection. Once established, replace the security one step at a time, checking that you can still connect after each stage.

One thing foxed me once was that my router was set to a proprietary double speed wireless g setting; one laptop could cope, so I had no problems until I tried to connect another. It took me a long time to realise, but as soon as I reset the router to standard g I immediately had full connection.

      Regards,

      Felix

Thanks for all your help guys.
When I try connecting the standard "cannot display the webpage" appears. I've tried connecting to the router manually via the windows utility and disabling the router's security but still nothing. The adaptor informs me I have the latest driver and that it is working properly.

      Re: Laptop wireless connection

When using the windows zero config does it say that you are connected ?
If so try to access the router page using the wireless ,

What Operating System are you using ?
List any Anti virus software / firewalls you have installed also ,
Any does the laptop connect using the cable ?

      Re: Laptop wireless connection

      Nope no connection whotsover.
My PC uses Windows XP; the Laptop Vista.....is there a conflict with this?
The PC runs AVG, I've knocked off the Windows firewall. It also runs something called "SpyBot".
The Laptop is brand new so I have not yet updated it with the 30 day McAfee trial and I have also knocked off the Windows firewall.

I've also had no joy trying to connect with the ethernet cable.
