      Nokia N96 WLAN connection

      Hi,
I've just purchased an Nokia N96 phone and having problems connecting to my router. I disabled the WPA encryption and it worked fine but as soon as it is re-enabled I can't connect, users of the nokia forum suggest this is a problem with the sky router and not the phone.
I am using the dg834gt white netgear router - firmware v1.03.87
Any help would be gratefully received
      many thanks

I doubt if its the router if it works with no encryption, it would point to either the N96 needing WEP or that the network key is not being put into the N96 in capital letters for WPA. The default key is all capital letters, no numbers.

I'm having the same problem with the N95 8GB, and I changed my PSK from the supplied one ages ago and am using the latest firmware from here [V1.03.87 (CU3.04)], the N95 uses WPA/WPA2 exactly the same as the Netgear V1

      P.S.

After looking at this again I think I have cracked it:
Goto Wireless settings in the router, click on setup access list then make sure that Access Control is NOT ticked.
click apply. and stay on that page. go to the Nokia and try to connect, it should try to connect and the MAC code should appear on the router page - add it to the list of allowed connections then tick the access Control box and apply.
I'm still trying to get a web page down, but at least it is no longer saying there is no connection.

Hi, thanks for your reply to my problem.

I have tried what you said above and I can now "connect" to my router but it seems to have problems downloading web pages as i keep getting a " web: no gateway" message.

I took my phone to a friends house who has tiscali and a speedtouch router and had no such problems i could access any webpage and they downloaded really quick to. Why is the sky router so user un-friendly?

any help would be gratefully received - thanks to thevoyager for your post

      Re: Nokia N96 WLAN connection

If you are using the default Sky passphrase for your wifi connection, please bear in mind that this is all upper case!

I connect my N95 without any special settings. It handles WEP and WPA in ALL it's guises. The N96 will do so too!
There is no need to find its MAC code or any other special bits. Get the passphrase correct and it will work!

Not if you have your WiFi locked down as I said, I keep mine locked down so that others cannot even get near my access point, never mind see it.

I have been able to connect to wap addresses and www addresses, but if you are trying to connect to any of the ones that come loaded with Voda SIMs then you will not be able to connect to any of the 'live' addresses, I think they only seem to work over Voda's own network.

I would recommend dropping down to WEP. On WEP my n95 works fine. The n95 and n96 use the same wireless programme so should be fine!

If your phone/router work with WEP, then they'll work with WPA!
