Better security on a wireless network..?

Need some advice on making a wireless laptop more secure.
The wife often uses the laptop in front of the telly to do shopping etc which involves having to log in her card number.
Using Sky broadband,I have Avast antivirus running and my connection tells me its "wap-secured" (noted a padlock-if Ithats correct)! but feel I should be doing more to secure my connection as there are loads of other networks in opeation in the listing.

Any ideas on the safest way to surf wirelessly if bank details are being used ?

      Cheers as usual
      P.

Firewall, Change the WPA key to one of your choosing and just be careful and scan the pc regularly.

Why not turn on Mac Filtering for the wireless as well as WEP 128 Bit security ?

Did you mean WPA-secured? If so you should be OK, but take Paul's advice and change the default Key. Forget about WEP, it is not nearly as secure as WPA.

The Sky Router is good with the security that comes preset on it.

The only other thing you could do is as said, change the WPA key (if you wanted) and set up MAC Filtering so that only the laptop is allowed to connect to the network.

MAC filtering can't hurt though it adds minuscule additional security. However, WEP? Why on earth would you use WEP if WPA is available

WEP is about as secure as using a rubber band to chain your bike to a lamp post.

No, it really isn't secure out of the box. The username and password for wireless can be worked out using the MAC address of your box, and the MAC address of your box is broadcast for all to see. Change the WPA password.
