      Disconects when I download

For months (years) I have successfully been using both wireless (2 laptops) and 1 wired PC to my Netgear.

yesterday I connected another Laptop 'wireless' and all appears ok - quick connection can browse web etc.

However, as soon as I try to download a file - e.g to install Anti-Virus, or Windows Messenger - the connection drops and then I get 'Acquiring Network Address'.

If I restart it works fine for as long as I dont try and download, then same results.

Can anyone give me any ideas what may be causing this?

      Thanks

Someone near you may have gone wireless recently and is now interfering with your channel, you will need to go into 192.168.0.1 via internet explorer, user name is admin, password is sky and check what channel you are on (wireless settings link in white router, setup link in black).

Does this happen when you are connected by wire? Installing the latest drivers for the wireless adapter may help.

      Thanks for the replies.

I havent tried by wire - will do tomorrow.

Regards the interference on the channel - is it likely this just effects downloads and not normal browsing (which is fine)?

      Re: Disconects when I download

Browsing moves very little data, downloading obviously is the opposite. More demand on the connection may just focus the issue and cause more of the disconnects.

Ok just tried 'Wired' and works fine.

I have checked and I am on 'Channel 11' - is it worth trying to change this, if so does it mater to what?

Best bet is to start at 13 and work down, click apply affter changing the channel, see how the wireless performs.

      Re: Disconects when I download

acquiring network address normally means the network key isnt enetered correctly. if using the default WPA-PSK key(printed on router label) then re-enter this carefully to the laptop experiencing problems. make sure you enter it in capital letters if using WEP then log onto your router settings page and retrieve the network key and try and re-enter it.

this generally resolves the issue of "acquiring network address" with wireless connections but normally you are unable to browse wirelessly whilst it says acquiring network address. if it ever comes up saying "limited or no connectivity" then all the laptops/pcs will need a static ip address.

apart from that try and download the latest drivers for the wireless card/adapter as suggested previously and disable your firewalls temporarily.

      best of luck, misfit96

      Re: Disconects when I download

I don't think it will be a security issue when it is connecting OK, then failing when 'under load'. Maybe if the OP can post his stats, with the router in it's normal position and from the Test socket, it will reveal something.
