This is a discussion on Acer laptop won't connect within the Wireless / Adapters forums, part of the Sky Broadband help category; still no joy - i even took a web book home from work to see if that would connect but ...

still no joy - i even took a web book home from work to see if that would connect but it just sits there with pending status (it runs linux)

i guess this may means an issue with the router - as it is over 2 years old i guess it doesn't fall under sky's warranty?

this is probably a stupid question but can i use any router with sky bb?

      Re: Acer laptop won't connect

One other thought - I had a problem recently where DHCP had been switched off in my router. That stopped my laptop(s) getting IP addresses and I solved that initially by manually assigning IP addresses/submask/gateway. I then found that my routers DHCP had somehow turned itself off and simply turning that back on allowed me to go back to Automatic DHCP for all devices.

I'd try another Windows laptop before I'd say it was definitely the router - the Linux machines can be a bit of a problem to connect (several old threads on this forum if you're interested.

If you genuinely think the Sky router is the problem call Sky - I think they simply replace the faulty router no matter what age. Their T&C's say you MUST use a Sky router (but many don't!) and you'd need to extract the User-Name and Password from your existing router for transfer to a 3rd party router. Again look in Tools/Tutorials for how to achieve this - it differs for different models of router.

I doubt they will replace it for a "possible wireless fault". They will replace it though if it fails to power up at all

I think if the Wii is connecting the wireless will be OK. The iPhone problem is probably the old 'is it caps or isn't it', with the iPhone looking like it is outputting caps when it is not.

What I would do in this situation, is uninstall everything referring to the Wireless from the laptop, drivers and management software. Get the actual make and model of the wireless adapter and go to the manufacturers site and download the latest drivers. Install the drivers and allow Windows to manage the connection. I think a lot of problems with Vista and wireless is conflicts with 3rd party software. Vista is optimised for wireless and should need nothing more than the adapter drivers.

Also another thing to try ,
Due to the fact its a laptop most wireless is set to save power and so the range can suffer ,
You could check the device setting to see if this can be changed on yours this is some times called " Roaming Aggressiveness " Or you could change the " Transmit Power "
And from what i have seen the best channels are the higher ones i like to use 11 my self ,
But for the netbook not connecting try changing the SSID also .

      Fingers crossed man

Thumbs up Re: Acer laptop won't connect

      Hi,

I have just had the same problem with my brand new Acer Aspire 5920 laptop with Vista Home Premium. I have a few pc's connected to wireless without any problems but this laptop just did not want to connect.

I knew that the problem had to be on the laptop. I solved it at follows:
      1. [Vista] Right click on the Computer screens next to the clock and select Network and Sharing Centre
      2. On the new window under tasks, Select Manage Network Connections
      3. Right click on Wireless Network Connection , Click on Continue on the popup window
      4. Under the Wireless Network card discription, click on Configure
      5. Click on the Advanced tab
      6. Select the last option in the list Wireless Mode.
      7. Change the value to 802.11g

After I have done this, i could connect and type in my network key. All was working after that.

I hope this solves your problem

That's interesting - I am having exactly the same issue: how do I change the WiFi card to that setting?

As Vista and Win 7 both use the Network and Sharing Centre, the process will probably be the same.

      Re: Acer laptop won't connect

Just bought an Acer 5742 but will only connect to sky router if in same room or room upstairs directely above the router. Any other room in the house and although signal is good it says cant connect to sky router. Router is fine because running 6 other wireless devices no problem (not at the same time). Rang Comet tech support and said nothing wrong with card if it connects to internet. If its not the card then could it be settings or a fault card antenna....can anyone help, Thanks Simon
