Question Connect printer upstairs to router downstairs?

Hi can anyone please give me some advice on how i can connect my Brother Network printer (not wireless) to my Netgear V2 router i have downstairs so that all the computers connected to the router can use the printer.

My router is plugged downstairs into the master socket so i cant move that. I have 2 laptops and 1 PC and PS3 which all connect to the router using wireless. I was initially thinking of running a CAT5 cable from the printer down to router, but i would need quite a big cable and a bit of time to perform a clean install, i.e. through the loft and down the walls. This would work, but isnt really future proof for example if i want to connect another Computer upstairs to my router or another printer etc i would have to do all that again.

Is there some kind of hardware device (with a few connections) that i could buy and place upstairs which can connect to the router wirelessly?
For example i have a spare V2 router, would i be able to put that upstairs and connect a PC and printer into that, and then wirelessly connect to my router downstairs? Or is that not possible?

      Any advice would be appreciated.

      Thanks

You could use a pair of Homeplug devices. Plug one in by your printer. Connect your printer to it by CAT5 cable. Plug the other one in by your router and connect it to your router by CAT5 cable. Job done. Sorted. Not the cheapest solution, but getting cheaper. You won't regret it! I think Maplin have some own brand kit that's relatively inexpensive.

Re: Connect printer upstairs to router downstairs?

what i do is have some external grade cate5 cable (20m cost about 10 on ebay) from the router at the master socket by my front door. It goes outside the house, tacked onto the external wall, around to the back of the house, up the wall and into my back bedroom. The cable then goes into a 2nd router (actually an Apple Airport Extreme which has wireless N). The printer then plugs into the Airport Extreme.

I also have my PC upstairs plugged into the Extreme along with a NAS so that my hard drive is accesible on all PCs.

I chose the Extreme as it has a print server as my Printer was just USB and not a network printer. It also has an FTP sever, Smb server, itunes server etc etc.

I used to have a netgear wireless print server (also has 4 network ports) which works much the same way, except that can connect to the Sky Router wirelessly so no need for the Cat5 cable. http://www.netgear.co.uk/extra/h_wir...er_wgps606.php (I think i paid 20 for it off ebay).

You would only need to run 1 cat5 down to the router. then just a switch box upstairs and you can add as many pc's, printers to that as you want to.

I do basically the same as reddwarfcrew does.
