connecting a second laptop to wireless

I got sky broadband about 3 months ago and after initial problems with the wireless router I was able to change the channel and connect. I haven't been having any problems since. Now I trying to connect my flatmate's laptop and it won't pick up any signal from the router, I have tried resetting the router, changing the channel, disabling the security and nothing is working. I downloaded network stumbler and it is picking up the signal. but still can't connect.

Could be a number of things. By trying with the encryption turned off (and it still won't connect) you eliminated the most common problem as the prime cause.

Next up would be to ensure that your flatmates TCP/IP settings are set to obtain IP automatically and no proxy (it may be configured for another connection which won't allow it to connect to your router).

I know this sounds dumb, but if the laptop has built-in wireless check that the wireless switch (usually on the case front edge or side) is in the ON position, there's often an LED indicator.

That's not dumb, that's the first thing to check! If there's no switch then look for a key combo like Fn+F6.

Always start at the very beginning!

How does your flatmate normally connect to t'internet?
