Connected to internet but painfully slow

We've just bought my dad a new laptop and he has sky wireless broadband. Set up the internet in 5 mins, laptop found the router, i just typed in the network key provided by sky and that was that.

However his internet is incredibly slow, takes minutes just to load something like google. He's definitely connected to the internet and he has full signal strength.

The only thing i can think of is windows is downloading an update of about 180mb (presumably because the laptops new so it has a lot of updates to carry out) and such a file is affecting the speed although that sounds like a longshot.

Does anyone have some suggestions? Any help is greatly appreciated.

If you are downloading a large file then there may be little or no bandwidth left for anything else, especially as you are using wireless.

How fast is the update loading?

You may need to wait until it is all done before you will see the real speed you have. Although you can get the router stats and post them here so we can get some idea what is going on.
