      Angry No Wireless Connection

      Hi,

Had sky for a while and after a few initial problems got the wireless working. Then at some point in the last couple of weeks it stopped connecting wirelessly until around half an hour after the laptop was switched on (i've heard this might be something to do with a windows update?). Got a bit sick of it and tried a few of the suggestions on here but nothing worked, so I wiped the pc and reinstalled windows (Vista, it really needed doing anyway!).

Now it wont connect at all, can't even see the wireless network, I've tried changing channels on the router, resetting the router, turning off windows firewall, turning off Avast, made sure driver sofware is up to date etc etc and nothing works.

I've always been able to connect via cable.

      Any help would be appreciated!

      Thanks.

      Re: No Wireless Connection

Log into the router and turn off the wireless WEP or WPA encryption and try to connect again. If successful, reinstate the encryption again, using the same key on both the router and the laptop.

      Then reinstate firewalls, etc

      Regards,

      Felix

      Re: No Wireless Connection

Thanks for the quick reply Felix, unfortunately that didn't work, still can't even detect the wireless network. (I assume the only firewalls I would have are Windows firewall and the Avast software?)

      Re: No Wireless Connection

Can you detect any wireless network (neighbours etc)?

Could your wireless adapter have failed?

That would explain the problems getting worse.

(Equally, it could be the router wireless that's failed.)

      Re: No Wireless Connection

firewalls ain't got anything to do with it. how far is the router to the computer? wireless canbe a pain. if it's too close it can be a problem..

what's in the house between point a and b, fish tanks, dimmer switches, cordless phones and such things.. If you're in different rooms.. are the Walls fairly thick?

there has been vista issues such as "windows cannot connect to the network" which is a akm and aes issue.

      "unidentified network"
pain in the **** and if you search it on microsoft.com there's about a 10000 things to do to resolve it.. including editing the REGISTRY!!!!

what you have to think about is if the wireless light is on the router and computer... and if both ticks are in the wireless settings page
A day without laughter is a day wasted.

This is the important question here, can your wireless device see ANY wireless networks at all? If it can, how many? If it sees none how can you be sure the wireless device is working at all?

      Re: No Wireless Connection

After you reinstalled Vista, did you go through the process to set up a wireless network? If not, follow this Basic tutorial

To rule out possible hardware faults have a look in the Device Manager and check the Wireless adapter is shown, with no problems.

      Re: No Wireless Connection

Thanks for the replys...I'm at work but I'll try the suggestions out later!

Can you detect any wireless network (neighbours etc)?
No...but I couldn't before (except my own), i'm going to take it to my dads later and see if I can detect his.

how far is the router to the computer?
      A few feet, normally.

what's in the house between point a and b

Nothing really, and certainly nothing that wasn't there before things started going wrong!

if the wireless light is on the router and computer
Yes the light is on both.

both ticks are in the wireless settings page
      Where's this?

After you reinstalled Vista, did you go through the process to set up a wireless network?

Yes, it couldn't find any networks.

To rule out possible hardware faults have a look in the Device Manager and check the Wireless adapter is shown, with no problems.

In the device manager it said that the Wireless adapter was working fine, and the drivers were up to date.

      Thanks!

Yes, it couldn't find any networks.
This suggests either your wireless adapter is switched off or faulty or the wireless on the router is switched off or faulty.
