How do you configure windows 98?

I have just subscribed to Sky broadband, and installed it in about a minute on my 'XP' laptop - its working great.

However, I have an elderly desktop running windows 98se, and I would also like to connect wirelessly. I have bought a 'wireless USB dongle' for it, but can't even see how to get into any menus to start entering any information into my PC. The wireless dongle is installed and listed in device manager, but all I can access is its 'properties'.

Can anyone walk me through how to set it up? (I'm not a PC novice, but I'm also nowhere near geek territory either!)

      Stephen

Is the dongle compaitible with win98? Win98 will need a driver seen as it doesn't really offer a plug and play option.

Windows 98 doesn't support WPA encryption as standard (not sure if it will once the dongle is installed). you'd have to set to router to use WEP instead...

Before you bought the device you did check to make sure that it would work with Windows 98 didn't you?

Re: How do you configure windows 98?

Yes, the dongle is compatible with windows 98 and comes with specific drivers for the purpose, The installation went OK and as it now appears in the PC's my computer - 'device manager'. I assume it is properly installed, with the message 'this device is working properly'.

Just don't know how to proceed next as I'm not sure how to access a setup wizard, if indeed windows 98 has one!

Re: How do you configure windows 98?

you should have an icon in the bottom corner for the wireless software. go into this and you want to connect to your router (will be called SkyXXXXX) and use the network key on the bottom of the router - unless Windows 98 won't use WPA encryption - in which case you'll need to configure the router to WEP

Re: How do you configure windows 98?

Ah, I think therin lies my problem....

On clicking the 'wireless' desktop icon, a small icon then appears in the bottom task bar. However, clicking, or double clicking on this doesn't seem to do anything, If I 'right click' I just get the option to 'exit. Is there another way to access the router connection? (For eg, in dial up, you can just go into the wizzard and manually set it up, is there something similar for wireless in 'control panel that I'm just not aware of?)

Re: How do you configure windows 98?

you need to plug the router in via the ethernet cable and then you can access the web interface using 192.168.0.1 in the address bar (username:admin, password:sky)

you can then change the encryption...

however, the adapter should see the network, just not connect to it so you might have issues with it. tbh, a new PC would probably be the best bet as Windows 98 is SO out of date it's false economy to upgrade it...

Re: How do you configure windows 98?

Thanks for all your help so far. My desktop is upstairs so I may consider moving the wireless router beside and connecting it via the ethernet cable. I know this would mean the router being connected to a telephone extension, rather than the master socket, but you never know, it might work? I'm not very demanding in internet use, just use for surfing, emails etc, no major downloading activity.

Yes, I'm aware '98se' is so old, but it is reliable and works for my meagre needs (apart from this one!). Hate spending money just because Bill Gates decides its obsolete!

Re: How do you configure windows 98?

      lol...

regarding the extention, it should work...it's just recommended to use the master to eliminate future issues...what are your current stats?

regarding Win98, it's not just having to spend money - it's security reasons...there are probably SO many holes in it you're taking a risk. but a decent security suite should help with that...
