As for security, I religiously use ZoneAlarm, AVG anti virus, and Spybot, and I've never had a problem with security (so far). Anyway, who writes viruses for windows 98 these days

Re: How do you configure windows 98?

Win 98SE does not have native wireless support. My wireless dongle came with software that provided the necessary support. Plus Win98SE cannot cope with security level higher than WEP.

Don't forget that if you change the encryption level you will also need to change it on your laptop.

Have a look on the CD that came with the adapter. You may find that the Connection Manager has to be installed as a separate item. In the past this has usually been done at the same time as the main driver, but now that OSs come with something like WZC, they are often separate.

Re: How do you configure windows 98?

I've come to the conclusion that the software with the dongle isn't up to the job. I've now ordered from my favourite shop (Ebay!), a wireless PCI card for my desktop which has been guaranteed to be 98se compliant.

If it still doesn't work, I'm only out 8 odd.

I'll let you good folk know how I get on, thanks for all your help to date...

Re: How do you configure windows 98?

Well, an update on my problem!

I installed the wireless network card into my PC and proceeded on the software installation. It tripped up by keep asking me to insert the 'win98' disc. This I did, but it consistently failed to find the files it wanted from the disc so I eventually just 'skipped' that part. Once finished, I could see the signal strenth meter in my task bar, green, with 5 bars showing, so I thought I was onto a winner. After fettling for another hour or so on the configuration settings, SSID, network key, WPA settings etc, still wouldn't connect.

Also, on rebooting, my PC consistently hung on a blue screen saying 'VFAT Device Initialization Failed'. Had to boot up in safe mode and disable card. Obviously something in the software installation screws up. (I beleive the card software is OK, but my individual PC is looking for extra files from the win98 disc and fails to get them!)

Plan 'B' was to relocate wireless router to upstairs beside desktop and just hardwire it to broadband. This I did, but when I spun the PC around to plug cable in, discovered it doesn't have an ethernet socket!

Now on plan 'c'. Using laptop on wireless broadband, and desktop on dial-up. Some years ago I would have seen this as a challenge and would have put in many hours trying to solve this, but to be honest, since working with PC's since windows 3.1, I've decided that issues like this have sucked up enough of my life. I just want something that works

Thanks for all your help anyway......

Re: How do you configure windows 98?

I have a laptop running win98SE with a wireless dongle.

Is it win98 or win98SE you are using? If you advise what files it wanted and which of the 2 OS's you are using I could forward them. PM me if you want them.

      Hi Chris,

I;m using windows 98se, and the files it says it was looking for were 'services'.

(Can't work out how to PM, bit embarrassing!)

Re: How do you configure windows 98?

OK guys, I solved my problem, although I did cheat radically!

Was getting tired of getting error messages, the odd blue screen, and various other barriers - so took the step of investing in a new (to me) desptop off ebay. It came with a clean install of XP. My wireless card loaded first time, and I was surfing within minutes of unpacking it! (PC well worth the 50!)

I've actually had my old 98se since 1998, so I guess 10 years constant use has served me well. Its also reminded me how quick any PC is with a clean install of an operating system before you crud it up with stuff over time.

Thanks again for all your input....

      Stephen
