Disconnecting, then freezing on connection repair

I've had sky broadband for quite some time now, and i'm used to the random disconnections that happen, this problem has always been simple to fix by just using the repair function on the connection wizard. However, recently this no longer works, it'll start by trying to disconnect the wireless adaptor and then just gets stuck there, I can't even cancel the process and when I try to restart the computer it'll even get stuck then after logging me off, and I have to manually restart it using the reset button on my computer.

It's really becoming a nuissance, as I can never go a day without the internet disconnecting on me, and with the only option available to me being to manually restart each time, it's growing tiresome.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is this a built in or USB wireless device? Also have you tried getting the OEM software out of the way and just leave windows to handle the device connection?

It's a Belkin network card that i got to go with a belkin router which we had before we'd switched to sky, and thus it now picks up from the new netgear router, which it did fine for quite a while until now. Already switched it to windows managing my connection

Have you tried changing the channel on the router. Use Netstumbler from the link below to discover any nearby networks. Set your channel number as far from any found as possible. WZC sometimes has the annoying habit of trying to connect to another network, failing and dropping the connection.

Re: Disconnecting, then freezing on connection repair

I've been trying that and it only finds one other network on channel 11, mine was 6, which seems far enough away to me... I changed it to 1 anyway and then some time later after a number of disconnects, I used NetStumbler again and it said that other network was now also on channel 1.

It's all very confusing though, through trying different settings on my internet connection recently I switched on the option to automatically connect to any other networks found, and now it seems to prefer this other network to my own! it's even faster than mine even though it has half the Mbps. This option was on while I was trying to change my network channel, and when I was connected to my own router, it wouldn't stay connected long enough for me to change channel and apply the settings, the moment i clicked apply it would disconnect and then connect to the other network, but then i'd check back again after connecting to my own and the channel was changed.... but then obviously that short time later I found out we were both on the same channel. Whether this has anything to do with it disconnecting and connecting to their network in the middle of the process I don't know.

Anyway, I've since switched off the option to automatically connect to other networks and removed the access point from the list, leaving only my own, and now it just won't find my connection whatsoever, i've restarted my computer and still nothing, I even moved the router away from our cordless phone just in case it was interfeering and moved it to the foot of the stairs where there's nothing blocking the distance between me and the router, except for my bedroom door, I get nothing.

And if you're wondering how i've posted this, I had to borrow the internet off that other network which my router loves to connect to, I know this is not a good thing to do, but if I could connect to my own then I would!

Put your router onto channel 13 and see if it helps. Its not just other routers that impact wireless signals, phone bases, microwaves, lights, televisions etc all impact.

Re: Disconnecting, then freezing on connection repair

P.S. With the disconnecting issues aside. Anyone know what the fault is with the windows connection wizard being unable to repair the connection? If my computer manages to find my router again, I would be happy to at least be able to repair connection each time it goes **** up, but as i've mentioned, all it does is attempt to disconnect network adaptor and then freezes up. I just want it to be able to repair so I could atleast, connect up again (to my own router!) long enough to access the router settings or something.

Yes, I did this, or at least attempted to do this before my computer could no longer find my router. Changed channel to 13 and moved router away from any interfeerance (cordless phone) but now I can't even find my router, let alone connect to it.

Re: Disconnecting, then freezing on connection repair

Try turning off the Windows connection manager and or the Belkin one. As I have said before, WZC is very guilty of trying to connect to the strongest signal, whether it is the right one or not. If the router you are connecting to had security set up, you would not be able to connect to it. WZC would connect momentary then drop the connection. From what I have read the Belkin connection manager is not very good either.

Download and install Download Manager Lite and try it. It is free and may solve your problem. There is no point in buying the Pro version as its only advantage is the ability to set up unlimited profiles, which is of no use to you.

You should also try channel 13 as suggested, many don't know that this channel works so don't use it.

Re: Disconnecting, then freezing on connection repair

I tried the connection manager program you suggested, still had the same problem where it would only pick up my neighbours connection and mine was nowhere to be found. However, one of the laptops in our house could still connect to our router, and so from there I accessed the router settings and rebooted the router, after that my computer could now find the router.

Upon first connection, internet was working for a little while but then stopped being able to load any websites, but it was still saying it was connected and stable.

I've since decided to remove the new program and stick to windows handling the connection, and so far, no problems.

It would still seem as though should there be a problem, my computer will still be unable to repair a connection, obviously I havn't had a chance to see if this is the case of not, but should the problem still be present, what can be done to fix this? as it's worked in the past no problem, so why does it now freeze when doing it?
