Frustrated. Help with wireless router please

      Good day to you all,
Having had problems connecting to my sky wireless router with my previous laptop and believing that it was in fact the lap top not the router I just lived without it. Got a new Dell lattitude D630 and thought that would be the end to all my problems, wrong.
All I thought I needed to do was locate the sky router input my netkey and away I go, (the wireless works in the office and other peoples offices etc but not in the house)
Found this site and was full of confidence reading as many posts on the same subject as I could, changing the channel on the router etc (btw I can access the internet via the cable)
I basically have done everything that your great minds have posted but still no luck.
Was about to blame the router but my son in law has just migrated to Sky and has the same problem, other people have said they have the problem also.
I do not think I am totally stupid but do think that there must be a simple explanation and a box unchecked somewhere.
The net key is accepted and it shows limited or no conectivity, go into properties and it shows recieving packets but I am unable to access the net.
Someone somewhere must be able to help, please!!!

      Regards
      Al

Possibly an encryption problem. To check, turn off encryption temporarily in the router. If the laptop can then connect then that's the problem - you've probably not entered the type/strength/key correctly.

Make sure the key is in caps to start with. Is this XP or vista?

It will accept the key if its in lower case, just then fails to obtain an IP address. Try the key again in caps.
If windows is controlling the device go into control panel, network connections, right click on the WLAN icon, properties, middle tab (if not 3 then third party software in control and you need to get the manual out) and remove all entries (including sky) from the prefered networks list.
