      Very slow/struggling wirelss connection..

      Hi all
Just calling on you knowledgeable lot for some advice.

I set up my laptop to operate wirelessly this evening but my browsing speed is ridiculously slow.
I'm registering 56mbps(?) with 'excellent' connectivity but its just so slow and often cuts out..

I have a very simple set up-Its a resonable spec machine and I dont expect it to go quite as fast as my main PC upstairs which is wired directly to my Netgear wireless router

Stuck my network key and SSID as provided by Sky so I think I'm all up and running but am I missing something that would make me go a bit quicker..?Will using Skys dongle as opposed to my wireless card likely to make any difference?

      Cheers for any advice
      Peter

The only differences are that the dongle can be waved around (when using the extension lead) to optimise reception which can make a big difference.......and that the Netgear user interface (The Wizard) that installs with the hardware is clearer than some built in wireless.

If using Vista, though, I think I would stick with the inbuilt -- and update to the latest driver for the adapter from the maker's site (Dell/HP or whoever) or from Intel if it's one of their wireless devices.

Could also try different channels in case there are other networks in the area on the same channel but as above letting Windows control the device is often the way to go.

Cheers guys, will try and change channel.

Also can I ask -do my settings on my netgear router need to be configured first before using a laptop wirelessly(or is this already done when Sky send the router out) and how will this affect my main PC that is connected to it by ethernet already..?

      Thanks for the ongoing help
      Peter

      Re: Very slow/struggling wirelss connection..

The router is pre-set from Sky, changing the wireless settings will not impact ethernet at all. Log into the 192.168.0.1 settings page via a browser, user name admin, password sky. If its the black router you need to go into Setup (top left link) or for the white its wireless settings. Black routers often go out set to Channel "auto", drop it into 11 or 13 and you may see an improvement. If not try the other channels (click apply button after changing any settings) and see what happens.

      Re: Very slow/struggling wirelss connection..

I had a similar problem, just switched to sky from pipex and it's very very slow, just instant messaged my son the instructions to change the channel and I thought I'd share his response:

      Jamie says:
      OMGGGGGGGGGGG
      Jamie says:
      IT'S FAST !!!
      Jamie says:
      WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWww
      Jamie says:
      +45Wooooow!

Safe to say I think it worked! Thanks a bunch!
