Angry Unstable Wireless Connection Between Router & Laptop

I have recently joined Sky broadband. I received my Sagem 2504 wireless router.
Iím having problems with a very unstable connection between the router and my laptop; it fluctuates between 54 Mbps to 1 Mbps. Works fine if I connect the Ethernet cable.
      Iíve tried the following:
      Reset the router
      Reboot the router
      Changed the channels.
Moved the router in every possible position.
Moved the laptop from 1 meter from the router to 20 meters away from the router makes no difference.
      Running out of ideas.

      Regards Assad

Have you tried the laptop with other routers? It might isolate the problem (ie is it the WiFi adaptor in the laptop or the router causing the problem).

Also have you tried turning off the WiFi encryption to see if this made any difference?

Finally have you any other possible WiFi source close by? Microwave, DECT phone, Bluetooth device and so on.

try changing the router channel as other networks nearby could also be causing interference
i find 11 or 13 good numbers to use talk talk and aol and sky usually come set to 5 or 7 (or so i have found with a few neighbours)

my netgear came as channel 1 but daughters laptop got poor and frequently dropped wireless signal until i changed channel to 11

Re: Unstable Wireless Connection Between Router & Laptop

Hi did some more testing yesterday.
I’ve used 2 different laptops now with 2 different problems.

Laptop 1 has an issue with an unstable wireless connection between router and laptop.
The wireless connection fluctuates between 54 Mbps and 1 Mbps however I did a download speed test and as long as the connection is higher than 12 Mbps the download speed is around 7 Meg if I connect the Ethernet cable the download speed is also 7 Meg.

Laptop 2 connects to the router at 54 Mbps and is pretty stable dipping on odd occasions to 48 Mbps not too bad however the download speed rarely exceeds 2 meg connect the Ethernet cable and download speed is at 7 meg.

So that leads me to believe the modem is functioning correctly but I need some help on my laptop 2 wireless settings so it downloads at 7 Meg

Any ideas what are optimal setting for my laptop are using a Sagem 2504 wireless router

      Regards Assad

Re: Unstable Wireless Connection Between Router & Laptop

I'd take a look at the MTU settings. Sky default to 1500 but other ADSL suppliers use lower figures (AOL is usually lowest but many more set a figure just below 1500 i.e 1496 or 1492).

Why are these important? Well if Sky are utilising MTU 1500 but your laptops are set to say 1492 then the 1500 packet is split to 2 parts of 1492 and 0008. Neither use the bandwidth efficiently and you will see lower effective speeds.

Worth checking out on you laptop's wireless adaptor settings.
