Unhappy Wireless connection using DG834GT router

Have recently bought a lap top (wireless) computer which can only connect to the internet via the ethernet cable, I'm using a Sky DG834GT router, when I go wireless it says connected and excellent signal but I can't get internet, tried with firewall on and off, also rang Netgear and Sky but they reckon its something to do with my security settings and could offer no further assistance. Would appreciate any help. I'm not using it for networking just wanted to get rid of my tower along with all the wires that trail behind it.

I assume from what you've said that using a wired connection is fine, which means that your software settings must be okay.

Can you check what IP address the laptop is getting when a) wired and b) wireless.

It's possible that whislt the wireless signal is strong, the quality of the signal is poor which is why you dont get anything. Can you try sitting next to the router as well as see what happens... and move the router away from any electrical devices.

      in XP/Vista go:

      Start
      Run
      CMD
      Enter
type ipconfig /all and enter and then it will tell you the IP address that you are connected with.

You could also try changing the wireless channel from 11 to something else (say 6).

Had exactly the same issue as you and thought it was interference. After taking advice offered on here, I manually assigned an IP addy within windows and the router and that seemed to do the trick.

Looks like your wireless device doesn't like WPA. Did you try it with WEP set on the router? Sometimes a driver update can sort this sort of problem out.

Re: Wireless connection using DG834GT router

Updated drivers nothing, someone told me to get a dongle which I did but this appears to just be a security thing for lap top as now I can't get into lap top without the dongle being in the usb port which is ok I suppose, but my internet connection is not secure is the dongle supposed to do this?
