Wireless can be seen but cant connect

      Hello,

Im new here so bear with me.

My friend has a SKY internet with a DG834 router.

He has two wireless adaptors, one Belkin and one Cheap Addon Dongle.

The router works fine through the Ethernet and both his PC and Laptop can connect through and Ethernet cable.

But when we try and connect using either USB Stick we have problems. we can see that we are getting a strong signal from the router, but when we try and connect it, it just simply wont, weve tried chaging from WPA to WEP to no encryprion at all, and it still wont connect via the Wireless. if go to command prompt and type ipconfig /all, all we get are the settings for the Ethernet port, nothing for the wireless. ive spend hours trying to get this to work but to no avail.

Is anyone able to offer any sort of advice that may help me with my problem.

      thanks in advance

      kyle

How are you trying to connect the laptop WiFi to the Router? I'm assuming your are using Windows XP where Microsoft use their own (excellent) WiFi Manager. However most WiFi adaptors come with thier own Wireless Managers and from experience I can tell you the two simply don't mix. If I was doing this I'd delete the Adaptor WiFi Management software (but NOT the drivers) and use the XP WiFi Manager. As you have 2 different adaptors I suggest you try this first.

Have you allowed the laptops to be "trusted wireless stations" in the wireless setting within the router setup ?

You do not have to add trusted stations to the router you should just be able to connect and make sure that the network key is entered exactly as it is on the card and on the router and more than likely the belkin adapter is wep and try connecting using the adapters own software and the windows software and if these fail then do what the second post tells you to do.

If access control is turned on, cant remember if this is the default setting for the sky router as its that long since I set it up, then any wireless device needs to be added as a trusted wireless station.

Absolutely - that way no pc can connect unless you allow it.
