      Unhappy Wireless Router Problem

Hi hope you can. I have tried to add a new laptop to my existing Wireless network. Initially it said it had low or no connectivity and just kept freezing. Original laptop was still working ok wirelessly.

But now original laptop won't work wirelessly at all, although the signal says the connection strenth is excellent, but I can only use it with the ethernet cable. The 2nd laptop will only work with the ethenet cable.

Not sure what other info you need as bit of a novice and a very frustrated one at that. Refuse to call Sky as they are no help and this forum has solved my problems in the past.

      Many thanks

      Ali

      Re: Wireless Router Problem

What version of Windows are you using?

If nodrog's advice doesn't help you might try changing the router Wireless channel (type 192.168.0.1 into you browser then Password admin) and try another number between 1 and 10 in the WiFi set up (don't forget to SAVE after changing)

If that doesn't work you can try from XP desktop Start>Run>CMD then in the box that appears type ipconfig /all (note the space before the /) and see what that says. Then type ipconfig /release (note space again) followed by ipconfig / renew. That should clear and renew all the ipconfig on your system as you may have two laptops trying to connect using the same ip address.

Have tried turning router off, but that didnt work. Being a bit thick, but cldnt see where to change the the number in the wifi set up. Do the numbers have to be different on each laptop ?

      Re: Wireless Router Problem

You change the channel no in the router not the laptops. Log into the router at 192.168.0.1 user name:admin password:sky and change it under "wireless settings".

      Re: Wireless Router Problem

Are both laptops running the same version of Windows (i.e. XP or Vista?)

If you've already found how to get into the Wireless settings on the router you could try turning the wireless encryption off entirely, just to prove that the wireless is actually working to each laptop.

I do rather think that the problem could be related to the channel number that the wireless is set to in your router. The channel number is on the same router configuration page where the wireless encryption settings are (see attached for an example of what you will see on a Sky V2 (black) router).

You are going to have to try and sort this out by a process of elimination, step by step.

      In the example attached (try in this order);
      1) To turn off wireless encryption click on the Disable button - don't forget to re-do how you connect your PC to the wireless network.

      2) If that does not work, leave encryption turned off and now change the Channel number from whatever it is to one of 1, 6 or 11 (or 1, 7 or 13 ) - again re-do how you connect your PC to the wireless network. Try each one of the three possible channels suggested in this step, one should work.

      3) If 2 solves your connection problem, leave your Channel number to whatever just worked. Turn on encryption again to WPA-PSK and enter a new Network Key (i.e. MyWEPKey as in the attached example)

      4) If none of the above work - check around your own house first to turn off anything wireless you may have - DECT cordless phones, Wireless house alarm system, that kind of stuff. Also may be worth asking the neighbour nearest to your Sky router if they are using any of these technologies. Not that you'll be able to get them to switch them off, but it is worth knowing so you can come back here and we can try and help you some more.

Let us know how you get on.
