No IP address? and possibly other problems...

      Hi all,

I posted in another help forum about some probs my friend has had since her pc power supply died on her. We have got the power supply replaced, got Windows up and running again (had to reinstall XP), and went to reinstall the Belkin wireless adapter to connect to Sky Broadband. Once installed, the connection continuously connects then disconnects every 8-10 seconds or so. Ping test tells us that there is no IP address at the router (?) It all worked just fine before the power supply problem, and it seems a crazy coincidence that the router suddenly starts playing up at the exact same time the pc screws up too, so I'm thinking that there is a setting I need to adjust in bios or in my browser settings, or perhaps I need to reinstall some motherboard drivers...I really don't know.
Sky said they can't help us with diagnostics because we don't possess a landline telephone (we just use it for the internet connection, not for phone calls), and won't help us at all.

That's the problem in brief. The whole story is here, in case anything I haven't mentioned here proves important:

Thanks for taking the time to read, and any suggestions would be very much appreciated!

      Kind regards, Jessica xx

Re: No IP address? and possibly other problems...

Sorry, just to add for anyone who doesn't read my post on the other forum - we have brought my friend's pc to my house and have managed to connect wirelessly here with no problems, so it seems that the pc is capable of connecting. Just not to my friend's wireless network! Baffled...

Also, the router is a Netgear, wireless adapter is a belkin wireless g, and she is running XP.

What are you using as a WiFi Manager? XP comes with a Zero Configuration utility and that would be my own personal choice. The Belkin will have it's own WiFi Utility. If you've loaded both then you can have severe problems. It's either / or but not both!

Not sure what you mean by 'loaded'? We have tried both the zero config and the belkin seperately. Neither is working for us unfortunately...

Re: No IP address? and possibly other problems...

The only likely connection with the PSU problem may be that the wireless adapter needs re-installing.

I think the ON/OFF connection issue sounds like it could be the UPnP bug in the white Netgear/Sky router (turn off UPnP).

OR it could be an simple wireless problem, in which case the first step is to turn off all wireless security and Windows firewall until you get a reliable connection. And try changing wireless channels.
