      Go to THIS page. Follow the instructions exactly. You do not have to create an account unless you want to, it is not a requirement for running OpenDNS, but it does give you access to some useful features. If you have already done this, try doing it again.

      If you have the old (white) router, as your profile suggests, it is fairly easy to set it up on the router, which means all PCs that connect to it, automatically use the open servers.

      well im now on open dns (and wired just to see if it does the same) and it looks like I have a faulty router, all of a sudden no webpages will load even though the green light is on but i cannot surf or do anything online.

      As you have gathered it is always better to get the connection working with ethernet before you start to try and fix wireless. Plug in to your Test socket, behind the faceplate of your master socket and see what the results are from there. You could have an internal or external line fault or a dodgy router. Plugging into the Test eliminates the first one.
