Have you tried turning off WZC? If you want to try, right click My Computer, select Manage, then Services. Scroll down to near the bottom of the list, double click Windows Zero Configuration, click the stop button then use the drop down box to select Disabled. Click Apply and close out the Management console. WZC is a good idea, when it works correctly, unfortunately in some cases it never does.

I would advise leaving the Security options in the router Disabled until you sort out the connection. Re-enable as soon as you have a stable connection.

Re: Dell Laptop cannot detect Sky Router

      Thanks

Fiddled around this morning and went through the replies i'd already got and......... changing channel number to 5 works! Great but............

      1. Leaving the ip address settings to automatic just hangs at acquiring network address.

      2. Setting the ip address manually says it has connected but still cannot get online as it says (using firefox) server not found.

      3. Have noticed during a reboot that the laptop hangs on startup before the maain desktop opens up for a long time.

      4. Noticed that in services the DHCP is starting not started....

I've tried disabling security, have made sure that the key has been entered correctly (with capitals). I've searched this forum for others having acquiring network address problems, but still cannot connect. Is there something simple that i have missed?

      What have i done!

^^^ DHCP maight be something to so with this. DHCP is run at the router, NOT on the laptop. If both are trying to run DHCP then they may be conflicting with each other. Switch off DHCP on the laptop and let it acquire its IP address from the router.

      ^^^^^^^^^^^
I was going to suggest the opposite! That you try to start DHCP manually and see what happens. I have DHCP started on both machines I have running at the moment, one XP and one Vista.

Did you try turning off WZC?

^^^ You could be right but I was thinking that if both were acting as DHCP servers then neither would be acting as clients!

Re: Dell Laptop cannot detect Sky Router

Yes, i did try turning off WZC but no luck.

Have now tried disabling DCHP but again no luck.

The closest i can get to getting this to work is manually entering ip addresses. Just to confirm i'm doing this right, if you were to change the channel to number 5 what would you enter into the ip address, subnet mask and default gateway? Also the setting for the preferred dns?

      Thanks

Re: Dell Laptop cannot detect Sky Router

      Think, touch wood, its fixed.

Disabled DCHP, ran winsockxp.exe. Shutdown. On restart manually started DCHP and viola!, internet ready.

Then altered DCHP to automatic and restarted to test and it works.

Just want to say a big thankyou to everyone who helped with some great advice.

      Thank you
